Navy For Moms

I find when I sit down to write a letter, I have very little to say.

My newest letter is like this:

Mentions the Navy Mom website. Mentions his dog. Mentions the weather. Mentions the man that got munched off Solana Beach by a great white (my son is a surfer so this would be of interest to him).

Mentions the funny noise in my car that sounded like a space alien UFO about to take off turned out to be the water pump, and that his step dad fixed it.

Reminds him to put our names and his grandma and bio dad on the list for grad tickets. Asks if he knows yet when his school starts.

And that's it! And I had to work hard to fill that up.

Tell me I'm not alone.

Hiya Muffin - I sort of went thru that at first, but then I thought, well if he was home, what would we be talking about ? (just normal stuff, kind of like you wrote today). Also, like some others I have been putting in jokes (a lotta Navy jokes, hope I'm not getting him in trouble !! hahaa), telling him I'm proud of him, telling him who is asking about him today, asking him questions (that hopefully he can answer when he writes....) Telling him about stuff I have read recently about the navy, bootcamp, etc. Telling him what's going on in the news (I doubt they get "news" there.) I have actually been slammed the last 2 days and not written and I feel really bad about it, I'm about to write him tonight. I try to put some jokes in every mail, and I told him to please share with whomever, maybe some of the kids aren't getting a lot of mail and could use a good laugh. (I know they're grown up but they're still our kids)

Go to the search bar and type in "Things to make us smile" I posted a hilarious email that I received, I sent it to my son and he said he read it to the entire division and the RDC's even made a copy of it....

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this - but I did not want to start ANOTHER (arms waving) forum.
I teach incarcerated men. We were talking about them writing letters home. I mentioned that I had not written Derek much since he is in "A" school and now has his phone. He can pretty much call whenever he wants.
They STRESSED - it is not the same as the written word. They get to call home - not just anytime - but they said that they LIVE for the letters. They kept telling me ( and making me feel guilty ) to write Derek just as often as I did before. I really don't think it matters what you write - just write - even more so in basic than in "A" school.

You are not alone. Look at us! We're here, right beside you. When I wrote my son in BC, I would make his letters look like the front page of a newspaper. I would write all the important stuff like you mentioned above, then I would insert pictures and write goofy little captions under each picture. Some of the pictures were older ones when he was little... like a him at his 12th birthday party. I had fun doing it, and I'm sure he had fun looking at the pictures and reading the fun little stories. I didn't have to write a lot... just enough to let him know that I was thinking about him. That's all that matters. That you care enough to write. :)

Type in LETTER WRITING IDEAS It was started in March by Tammi. there are some wonderful ideas. You don't have to entertain your recruit, just let him know that things are normal at home, and remind him of what normal is. Just knowing that you care enough to write and he is not forgotten is important. My son was a big Calvin and Hobbs fan. So I would put cartoons on one side of the paper and write my letter on another side.

MuffinTop, you are not alone. I have a son and a daughter and there is just a world of difference between them. Our daughter is very outgoing and has never met a stranger where our son has always been more analytical, quiet and a thinker. (so like his dad!!) I was always able to fill his letters up with plenty of questions - especially being on this site but he would respond to them in a bullet format! Some young adults just respond differently and I had to learn that about our kids along time ago.

I am sure he is treasuring every letter that you write and the simpliest of news...is news for him while at boot camp.

I sent the sports page from the newspaper

The chuck norris jokes seem to be a big hit with the guys today ...........I dont understand why they seem just so stupid to me.

Get a throw away camera and take a bunch of silly pics that he can throw away when he is done seeing them. Friends, dogs, McDonalds.

Postcards I sent many postcards from our town

OMG how could I forget ................. I printed this out and sent it to Colton when he was there. He said it really helped to be able to think about all that have come before him, and all that will be there after him. And just how important that he is now a part of RTC history also.
Heart warmng to say the least.
