Our recruiter told us it could be anywhere from 11pm to 2am. We're from Pittsburgh. He actually called 12:30am. So far that's the only phone call we've gotten. He left April 9th.

Hi Kelly,
We are about 20 miles north west of Pittsburgh, Aliquippa, Pa. My daughter left for boot camp on April 8th. I did receive the 10 sec call she arrived there safely. I was told by Public Affairs I should be receiving another phone call early this week and was wondering what time of day it may come. Can they call a cell phone if no one answers a home phone or do you just miss a call? My name is Rose and my daughter Lindsay is in div 203 ship 10. Thanks

the calls are so random lol
jus make sure u have ur phone with u at ALL TIMES!! and also make sure u are always somewhere with good service
and when u least expect it, the phone will ring
sometimes the call isnt long but its a call!

We live in Florida and how it works is they send all the recruits to Chicago when they get there they all wait in the USO till all flights have arrived and then they send the Bus to pick every one up.
I think they take them under cover of darkness so they won't know how to escape. LOL
Once at Great lakes they give them some uniform peices and then they get to call for less than a minute and say they are there.
If you call his or her recruiter they will know if they have arrived they will also give you their Ship # and Division # so you can start writing them it takes about 4 days to get mail to them even if you send next day or priority. They can only write to us on Sunday and I get the letter on Thursday and so does my daughter and his girlfriend in Maryland. They have mail call every day. So write write write. Hope this helps.
This next phone call after that was April 1st for me and my son left on March 11th and we have not had one since and he graduates on Friday May 2nd. While reading around this link there must be a lack of dial tone service at Great Lakes because no one ever gets a call. The US Postal service is sure racking it in though because the letters are like clock work thank goodness. I think the postal service and the Navy are both part of the Goverment so they are looking out for each other. MA BELL is a public company she only pays taxes.
Count 8 fridays including the Friday of the week he left and that will be his graduation date if all goes well.
Just when you get the gunk out of the corners of their rooms boot camp is over.

What happens if you miss the call, can they call someone else? Or is the one phone call it no matter if someone answers or not?

My son arrived on 6/20. He was able to text me from cell phone when they landed in Chicago. That was at 8:30pm PST (Im in California) so 11:30 there. The call I got from him didn't come til 11:35 PST, and I Missed it : (
I had my phone Ringer full blast waiting for the call, but for some reason, it went to voicemail and didn't ring, I just heard this loud beep, looked down at my phone and it said Data Roaming! ugh! it never does this in my house, but of course it had to pick a fine time. I was pretty much devastated, but he was able to leave a voice mail to let me know he was there. I tried to immediately call his cell phone back (he made the call from cell) and of course no answer : ) Just hoping he seen that I tried to call back.

Expect it late that evening. If you miss it, they won't get another call. Got our around 11:30 pm

not sure which phone call you are referring to if it's the I'm here call, that will normally be around the midnight to 2 AM range will be around 30 seconds long and scripted. The next phone call will be around 3 weeks, hopefully if everything is on schedule, sooner if something is wrong. My first real phone call came on a thursday around 6:00 pm and they will need a phone card to call because they will be calling from a pay phone. hope this helps- If they did not take a phone card with them they can purchase one at the exchange when they go over there to purchase personal items.

Momof4 When did your son leave for boot camp? Mine left Thursday 6/28. I got a call at 8:30 that he arrived at the airport. I asked if this was the "15 second, I made it" phone call or if he would be able to call again when arrived on base but he didn't know. I fell asleep around 10:30 pm. Obviously it had been a long day! I have a 7 month old who had me up at 5:15 am, we then went to MEPS to watch him get sworn in, so by 10 pm I was beat! I did get another call at 11:30 pm from him that he arrived on base. He said he probably won't get to call again for 3-4 weeks. I feel like I'm living in limbo. Wondering what he is doing , how it is going, when will he call??? Praying this 8 weeks goes by fast!

I have had my phone on me at all hours. I don't want to miss a call if I get one! I know it'll be a few weeks, but I'm a worry wart, so I'm not taking chances!! Blake didn't want me to go to MEPS (he didn't want to see me cry anymore) so I took him to the recruiter on Wednesday and he went to the hotel with him, he left St. Louis around 12:30 Thursday afternoon and texted me at 6:45 that he was there, then the call at 6:53...when he called, I barely got to say I love you and he hung up...I was a mess Thursday evening!!
