Tina -- James' mom

Anyone with a child leaving for Great Lakes the week of May 5?

My son is leaving for GL from Atlanta on May 7. I have no idea what time, flight, etc., yet. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there with a child leaving around that same time. They may end up together at GL. I'd love to have a "buddy" to go thru basic training with...lol.

Hi there...I am VERY new to this...My son, Nick left last Thursday 5/9, I just found out yesterday that he is in Div 933 Ship 6...Any help/support you can give would be great!! He wrote that 933 is thte "Princeton" of Divisions, but I don't know what that means or what 933 is?!?!? HELP!!!

thanks
Nicole
Nicole,

Welcome aboard! My son is Ship 6, Division 933, too. We have created a group for moms whose kids are going to graduate on/about July 4th (which is Nick). You can check us out (and join) at:

Do you know what a 900 division is? It's the performing division. They are the color guard, honor guard, musicians, etc. They perform at their own PIR (graduation ceremony) and the graduation ceremonies of several classes before theirs. I've found some video on youtube of graduation ceremonies. At the very beginning, you see the 900 division with state flags, etc. Here are a couple links:

There are others, use go to youtube.com and search "Navy PIR."

As far as "Princeton" I haven't heard that term, but I sure he means that they think they are the cream of the crop.

The tone of you letter makes me want to just hug you and tell you everything is going to be OK. My private email is mrsmcgee@aol.com. Feel free t us it, but everything really is going to be OK. We have a GREAT group of moms. Check out the PIR site it has everything you need: weather for chicago, diagram of the ship, videos, links to the graduation site (ours isn't posted yet). Depending on if they graduate July 3 or July 4, we are planning a get-together for the moms. Either dinner on the 3rd (if they graduate the 4th) or brunch on the 4th (if they graduate on the 3rd because they'll have to train at least part of the day before liberty). More on that as the time draws closer.

Right now, I know of 2 other kids in our son's division: Pam's son, Phillip; and Bev J's daughter, Megan.

We've all been in your shoes with our knees trembling!! I am keeping a blog on this site and I find it's very helpful. You are welcome to read it, just to prove to yourself that you're not nuts (or at least you're not the only one who's nuts!):

Seriously, go to the PIR site. Look around then let me know if you have any other questions.

Nicole,

I forgot to tell you one other thing (you might as well find out now that I am sorta the resident psycho of this group...the other psycho, Pam, is at the lake today so I feel like I need to take up the slack...). You should get a copy of the book Honor, Courage and Commitment. It's a couple of years old, but it follows a group of recruits from the minute they hit the front gate at GL through bootcamp, battlestations and PIR.

I promise you'll read it cover-to-cover the day you get it. I re-read mine the day James shipped out. My daughter asked if she could read it and I handed it over to her like it was a priceless family heirloom.

I assume you've received The Box and the form letter. It took me NINE DAYS to get my form letter. I thought I was going to wear a hole in the pavement between my front door and my mailbox.

tina
Thanks Tina, Yes , I got the box on Wednesday and the form letter on Friday...I mailed Nick a card and phone card today and have several other cards ready to go. My 6 yr old daughter's Kindergarten class is wrinting notes and sending pictures next week. He mentioned the only bad part is being lonely, so he has several friends and family sending cards, etc to him. This is all so foreign to me, I REALLY appreciate all of your kind words and support..I just keep wondering how he is...I hope I "hear" from him soon...

P.S. I must update my "photo", our heads are cut off!!!

THANKS!!
Nicole
I was going to mention that you were headless, but I decided not to stress you further. What ship and divsion is Nick?

tina
HA! Tina you crack me up! I was going to try and figure out why our heads were cut off, but i just uploaded a more recent pic with Me and all my "angels"!!
I'm sorry Tina, Nick , I think is in with your sone James, DIV 933, ship 6, right??
hi nicole, Nick is with my son also, Phillip ship 6 div 933
He should get time to write Sunday, so expect his letter Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday depending on where you live.
Nicole those first 2or 3 week's of boot camp all the letter's will seem so depressing... But trust me as the week's go by you will be noticing more and more upbeat letter's. most of these guy's and girl's have never been really far from mom and dad and their friends and been cut off from using the phone... So their first letter's can be pretty depressing.... Just hang in there with us and we will all get through this together..... We are a very strong bunch of women .... we are used to our live's revolving around our children.... and when the children aren't there we also go through our own boot camp hell just like our boy's. Being on this board and having so much support is what get's me through the day....
Hang in there and we are here for you anytime.....Just yell someonewill answer..haha
