Does anyone else have a son or daughter being held in Ship 17?

My son graduated on May 9th. He is being held on a medical hold for air crew. He just needs a waiver signed (thats it!!). He said some sailors have been there for 7 months. He is not allowed to check with medical at all, as his chief had recommended. All he can do is sit and wait. He's been told not to DOR(drop on request) because that is a gamble. Once you DOR can't get your status back and your stuck at a job you never wanted. Has anyone else been through this? Its heart breaking for us parents.

Yes. My son is in ship 17 and also had his PIR on 5/9. He was in div 178. He is also there on medical hold. My son has iron poor blood. He is anemic! I couldn't believe it when he told us. I don't think our kids will be there for very long. 4 weeks maybe. My son also is going for air crew. I'd bet they know each other. I only live 129 miles from Great Lakes. We are going to see him next Saturday if he doesn't have duty. Are you in touch with your sailor? He is allowed to call home. All he needs is a calling card. Maybe we could get him a message through our son. My son is Stephen Gramza. Let me know if we can help you.

Hi Jim. I'm sure our sons know each other. He's with all the guys from 178. My sons name is Derek Owen, he was in div 179. He said they have their own corner of the room. Morale is so bad in there. We talked to him last night (Monday). He's cleaning 10 hours a day and losing liberty hours over other guys bad choices. We are trying to keep his morale up via phone because we live in CT and can't visit. He has a calling card with 800 mins and we will just keep sending them. He has to hide his watch in a sock and lock it up, there is a lot of stealing in there. He was told by his chief last Friday to go to medical everyday and bug them. The petty officer in charge of them said he can not go anywhere. He said he feels like a prisoner. I just pray he can hang in there. When we were talking to him last night he was talking with another air crew medical hold, I wonder if it was your son? I will continue to pray for our sons. Thank you for your encouragement.

Hi Derek's mom, my son was placed on Ship 06 which from what I understand is the Medical part of Ship 17, he has written how bad the morale and negative and bitterness is. He was diagnosed with Gillian Barre Syndrome and was 10 days from PIR, he was @ North Chicago VA and now transferred there, where everything is depressing. He has weakness in his upper and lower extremities and is trying to get stronger and be able to finish but everything I am reading and hearing, is getting more and more worrisome. I don't understand what is up with the Petty Officer in charge not allowing them to go to medical. Please when you talk to your son have him look up Levi, unfortunately for him he got Bells Palsy so his left facial droop is noticeable and he needs some positive re-inforcement from inside. Are they allowed visitors on Ship 17 ?

Frieda, look for the phone numbers below on Rose's post. I know this must be frustrating for you. The one positive that I heard about ship 17 is they are allowed more phone calls.

thank you, I had not noticed this. LynnDear, he has always been positive, I have never heard so much sadness and distress in his letter, and he was only allowed 1 5min call to tell me his address and that they changed things up on him. They won't allow him to join a division where he left off at and he will just have to rehab and pass the test when they see fit. I am hoping unlike others I am reading about that they have him in there system and have not forgot about him. Steve's Mom also gave me some good advice that I need to breathe, pray and be patient about til morning. Frieda

Hi Frieda, I am so sorry for your sons plight. I will defiantly have him go find your son. My son is a great motivater and encourager. Hopefully he will call today and I will tell him to seek out your son and tell him there is hope. I am writing his name down as we speak. Is Levi his last name, because thats all they know is last name? I will keep you and your son in my prayers.

Diane, thank you for asking Derek to look for him. For security reasons I won't put my last name, but once you accept me as a friend I will be able to send you a message with our last name. Frieda

Hi Frieda,
Your name cropped up when I asked about Ship 17. You may have seen some of my postings. My son called last night and told us he was being sent home from the navy. He said he was getting a medical deferment for 6 months. He has developed severe tendonitis and can't complete his physical testing -- running. If the Navy had let him wear his inserts in his shoes none of this would have happened. He was very emotional last night, has loved being at great lakes and wants to remain in the navy.

He was not happy about Ship 17 and we really don't know if we should try contacting him at the ship number. we did call legal today to find out how we could get in touch with him. They had just received his paperwork. We would really like to know the extent of the damage to his tendons in both ankles.

do you have any advice about how aggressive we should be. Since he really wants to return and finish boot camp when he is healed we don't want to cause problems for him, but the things I read about Ship 17 are disturbing.

thanks. I hope you son is healing.

onward,

Ship 17 is where all the sailors who've graduated go if they are being held for medical, dental or legal waivers. It is across the street from the recruit base. They are sailors who have earned the right to be a sailor but are treated like recruits. They aren't allowed to have cell phones or computers. They are on hold until they have waivers signed so they can continue on to A school. My son went there Friday after graduation.
