Derek's mom - Diane

Does anyone else have a son or daughter being held in Ship 17?

My son graduated on May 9th. He is being held on a medical hold for air crew. He just needs a waiver signed (thats it!!). He said some sailors have been there for 7 months. He is not allowed to check with medical at all, as his chief had recommended. All he can do is sit and wait. He's been told not to DOR(drop on request) because that is a gamble. Once you DOR can't get your status back and your stuck at a job you never wanted. Has anyone else been through this? Its heart breaking for us parents.

Thank you so much Maria, I really appreciate it! I pray your son is out very quickly and on his way toward his career. If you ever get sad or frustrated you know where to find me. diane.

This is wonderful news. I am very happy for you and your son. How were you able to find the retired Commander ?

unfortunately i am not a mom, however i am a navy wife and I apologize if i am intruding on your post, but my husband has been sent to ship 17 due to a pulled muscle, he was 2 weeks into basic and now they are giving him the option to stay at ship 17 for 6-12 months or have a medical discharge. Just wanted to know if anyone had heard about wives moving to the base and the husbands being able to stay with them then just go to rehab everyday.?

Hi Andrea, I am not sure, and you can ask , but I would think not. Just because he is still a recruit. My son is a recruit also and 6 weeks into Basic, became very ill, although he is not in a civilian hospital right now and that is where I was allowed to visit and spend time with him, once he was sent back to base on a Medical Ship also but Ship 06, he is still treated as a Recruit. Meaning he can only write letters and when allowed he may have a phone call. No visitors at all for him. You may want to contact Ship 17 and ask that question.

Sorry Andrea, you may want to contact Steve's Mom or Karen Gallagher, they are great resources and have access to some numbers. Hope they can help you.

Hey Andrea, I just read on one of my pages that Jeannie's husband called ship 17 and also Rose R. had made contact with Ship 17's medical department. Take a look at their site.

Andrea, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. Is it possible for him to take the medical discharge and re enter at a later date? I've heard of others who are doing that. Why would it be 6-12 months for a pulled muscle? Doesn't that seem a bit excessive? Keep me posted. diane

Thank you Maria and Amber!

I am so glad things are working out. Your sons are strong men and this will make them stronger. I am proud of your sailors. Many would not have the strength to hang in there with a positive attitude. God bless your boys!
