Navy For Moms

For some strange reason most of our kids have a bad case of bronchitis during boot camp (some turn into pnuemonia). Is it related to the vaccines or some strange bug that won't leave that base? It strikes me odd that a perfectly healthy kid can get that sick. It would be interesting to hear from anyone else who's perfectly healthy child caught this "bug".

I'm not sure about Great Lakes but most basic training facilities (branch-wide) have what some have referred to as boot camp "crud". Think about it...all these individuals, coming from all over America...different immunity levels...it's basically a petri dish. Add to this these recruits are dealing with sleep deprivation, high stress...it all leads to the body's immunity dipping. Only natural that a virus will occur.
Also remember that the Air Force dealt with a breakout of this last year.

Also, as you noted, some vaccines can make one fill a bit under the weather afterwards. I think there is one in particular that hits hard (my father referred this as well as some cousins). Similar to a flu vaccine in the civilian world, you might feel a bit under the weather the day after. This is normal.

Sorry if it seemed as if I was talking down to you, I'm an RN as well.
This was an issue with the Air Force last year. Some recruits required hospitalization. I don't know what the organism was.
All of the folks I know who have gone to basic in any service get the "crud"...and please feel free to also research military.com on this (which is where the Air Force incident came up).
Hope your kid feels better.

No offense taken, I started this conversation, because I saw my very healthy daughter get very, very sick during boot camp. I know when she was a baby she had very bad reactions to vaccines. I made the Dr's cut her vaccines in quarters. I thought this it was odd , that all her division and previous divisions had respitatory problems. If I did not have medical info I would not have thought anything of it.

I hear ya! y son got a cold within 2 wks of being there, and it lasted week. hen, he was SIQ'd over the 4th of July weekend , Fri-Sun! I'm and RN, too, and am wondering about the sickly enviornment, too! He had a 102 temp for 3 days. They did test him for strep, and it was negative. This is a very healthy kid, who doesn't smoke, either. Well his PIR is 7/25, so goodby crud!!

Maureen, I will have to research military.com again for the specific organism that caused an outbreak at Lackland. That specific incident led to cases of pneumonia.

My lovely daughter had a temp of 103 -104 for 3 days, and she refused to go to get help. I would have told her Please see the Dr. But , it wasn't until PIR until I found out about it. She spent most of PIR with us sleeping. She had very bad brocnhitis, I wished I had taken my ausilated so I could listen to her lungs.

My son, also was sick and SIQ'd for 2 days. Said he hadn't felt good, had an appt on July 1st to follow up with ENT about his ear (he failed his hearing test initially)...he had a temp of 102.9, both ears were infected, congested, really sore throat, etc. In his last letter (7/6) he said he was on light duty, was concerned about not having his strength back for his final PT test. He has always been a pretty healthy kid, doesn't smoke or anything, either, so hopefully he has recovered quickly. What vaccines do they get before boot camp?

They get every thing at once Most states have regulations about entering kindergarten they must have all childhod vaccines. As a good mom you keep your childs medical records. The Navy doesn't go by those. They assume that nobody has had the vaccines and they give them again, all at once. So your childs natural defenses are down, these kids bodies are so busy trying to make antibodies for these vaccines it weakens your childs defenses.. Your kids body is trying really hard to produce antibodies to umpty diseases. Which makes them extremely suseptible to a virus. Food for thought--everyone has strep in thier throat, it's a comon bacteria everyone has. It's only when a virus infects the bacteria that you get strep throut. Bacteria get infected by virusis

When they get there the first day they are warned about aloo kinds of nasty little bugs they can get.Staph is on of the big ones. I guess if you put that many people togeather you just have to be carefull. I told my daughter to wear shower slippers and use lots of hand sanitizer not to share any thing ect .Kind of like summer camp when they were little. Sami still got a couple of buggs plus a nasty bout with kidney stones.

i don't mean to be mean, but are you hearing what you want to hear. Staph is cured by antibiotics. Mty daughter has a BA. She has spent her last five years living in a dorm and she has never been this ill. The Navy gave her an inhaler to help her open up her lungs so she could get by and graduate GL She is at A school now and can't see a Dr. untill she classeds up
