Hi JoAnne, my son is being deployed Sept. 3, I thought I was fine with it too, but as it gets closer it gets more difficult for me. This site is the BEST support I have found!!! Lois

I just read your post and wanted to respond. My son leaves today for Iraq...I always knew it was a possibility, but with the Navy I thought it would be in the Gulf and how much safer he would be on a ship than on the ground. Not the case. He volunteered for ground duty and will be a prison guard and Humvee driver for the next 10 months. I thought when we first heard he volunteered for orders that we would handle this with little difficulty; after all I am prior navy, the daughter of a lifetime sailor, a sister of 3 sailors and now a navy mom. Honestly...This is absolutely the most difficult thing I ve ever had to do. Seeing him get on the plane broke my heart. I know in my soul he will be fine but my heart feels like a part of it is missing. Please dont be hard on yourself, and if you want to chat Im around.

Hi LMN, When my son told us he was joining the Navy, I was fine, because I also thought he would be on a ship! He is a SeaBee, not on a ship!!! I am also bothered by the fact I will not be able to see him before he leaves! He left home(R.I.) in early June and we haven't seen him since (we do talk and e-mail), it is just not going to be possible for my husband and I, or either one of us to get to Mississippi before 9/3, and that is really bothering me. He says "don't worry about it mom, I will be fine", but I don't think he would tell us if he was disappointed that we are not going to see him before he leaves!

Hi Lois- My son is also a Seabee, also from RI, He just graduated from eco on Fri and joined his battalion. However, we have been planning to fly him home to see him before he leaves or is on lockdown, but after the news last night - I am afraid that all I will do is cry and want to tuck him away somewhere (lol)
Where is your son getting deployed to on 9/3?

Thank you , I felt the same way but Thomas is a Seabee, so I knew that he would be on the ground I guess we just didn't expect it this soon..
Is he your only child?only son?
These damn kids volunteering like that - don't they know what they are doing to their moms - proud and pissed all in the same dam emotion!! Is there a word for that???(lol)

I would say YES! I know we sat on pins and needles waiting for word of where our son would end up and nothing prepares you. No word can comfort you but do know that we as a "troop" here support you with everything we have. I know this from experience, you will get more emails than you can read in a days time. Read every one of them and start a journal. I have found it to be my best friend during this time. Listen to my new song. I open my page every day and play it over and over again, it is a sad song but the words are so true!....Email me any time, I will always answer you!

My son Garret has been in the service for almost two years and told me back in December that he was going to Iraq. He has been in Iraq for almost a month and will be there for a total of eleven months. There were a total of 200 that went with him. He seems to be coping fairly well with it thus far. He said it the temperature has soared to 140 degrees and has gone down to 86 at night. Overall, he seems to like it so far. My email address is hoover81@hotmail.com if you ever want to chat. I am new to this site and have had some email me which has helpedd.

Hi JoAnne, There seems to be no set way to handle this. You are very normal . You are not expected to take this news well. No one does. I didn't, nor did my husband. It will take time for you all to absorb this. My son is in Afghanistan right now. He is a medical corpsman. He's only been there for a couple of weeks (August 2nd). We just take it day by day. We have been hearing from him since he has been there by satellite phone up until last week. We are getting anxious to hear his voice. I know he must very busy. I just have to keep busy. We have to try to be just as brave as our boys are. Let yourself have your moments. Believe me, I do. It does feel better to talk it out too. You are not alone in this. We are in the same boat as you. If anytime you need to talk, I'm here. Tell your son Thank you for me. Will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. Janice

I found it difficult as well. Just keep up the communication on this site. I found it was more difficult for me as a Mom than my son in the Middle East. SKYPE is good to hear his voice :) My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sailor - Kathy
