Navy For Moms

I would like to find a few books and/or videos explaining what the Navy is and what sailors do that would be appropriate for a 6-8 year old audience. If it were written at that reading level, that would be a bonus.

I have found a few story books that have animals having sailing adventures but nothing specifically about the Navy. I also found a book series about a little girl whose dad is a Navy Chief but it did not sound like there was much about day-to-day sailor life.

Have you gone to the book club page?

Book club page? As in Group? I searched for books, kids books and children's books before posting the question. I did not get any hits.

I found the group and posted there too, after I checked their discussions and did not find the answer.

wow, tough search. I couldn't find anything. Are you going to write one? :) here are a couple you probably already found about the seperation from parent. But I also, couldnot find anything about the Navy jobs for kids.

Piper Reed: Navy Brat more for middle school kids, not much day to day about Navy job though
My Dad's a Hero 4-8 year olds about deployements
When Dad's at Sea 4-8 year olds, more on seperation issues while parent is out on deployment

I ordered a book called "I miss you" from www.mil-mall.com. I haven't received it yet so I'm not quite sure what it's about. I've been looking too.

There is a book that I got for my grandson when he was born its called the U.S. Navy Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta, it may be a bit young for a 6 year old since it is an alphabet book but it provides some interesting information about the Navy and has wonderful pictures.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I am doing some more research and have unearthed a few reference type books and the alphabet books but I am still looking. I will be emailing the Navy PR folks to check there too.

Our own Mamma Fry (Jan - A Southern Belle) was looking to write a children's book. I am not sure how off the ground it's gotten. I know she has been tied up with a wedding. I'll check with her to see how it's coming along.

I don't recall who put the book(s) out but when my sailor was in 1st or 2nd grade he would
bring home books about the Navy Seals and various other branches of the military and/or
about specific jobs. I will see if I can call the school to see if they still have these or if the
librarian recalls the series and who put them out

hey I just Googled the subject and found that Matt Doeden has several books out for children on various military branches and jobs, etc. Try www.clrlibrary.com and do a search on him . . .

This is another discussion that was started and I'm seeing it as information, not solicitation so here's the link . . .
