Navy For Moms

I just have a pretty general question I'm sure someone can answer for me. My boyfriend wants to buy a laptop and cell phone once he GETS to A-school, but are they allowed off base to do so? Don't they have to phase up in order to get to go off base to go and buy those things? He is going to pensacola for AO classes and they are extremely backed up and I heard that it may take months to get into their classes, and during the waiting time they may or may not be able to class up...so I have no clue if he'd be able to go off base to buy those things in order to stay in contact...Would it be wiser to buy the cell phone and laptop during liberty graduation weekend and then give it to a family member or me and then send it to him after he arrives at A-school and I know his address? I'm really curious for an answer because I feel like my hand is ready to fall off, I can't wait for the laptop and cell phone time
Thanks everyone!

Sarah, Save your hands! He will have to complete a couple of weeks of classes in Pensacola (sailorization, money management, sexual harrassment, etc). After that, he should be allowed to buy a cell phone and laptop at the NEX. It's a big NEX and they have an ATT kiosk there as well as many shops, almost like a regular mall. Make sure he has a phone card at PIR so he can call you every chance he gets ( and he will call). We overnighted our Sailor's cell phone and he got it just fine. ( he used a friend's phone to tell us when to send his). Once his A school classes begin he will have to stow away his phone and computer for a couple of weeks. Be patient - get him (and you) a web cam - get a manicure!
I guess it depends on where he is staying ( what ship). My son moved right after PIR, and was allowed his cell phone immediately. He was grad n go (although he stayed at Great Lakes). He was allowed a lap top right away also. He did buy a bluetooth earpiece because you're not allowed to clip the cell to uniform and its not supposed to be noticeable in your pocket. I let him use my laptop until he bought one of his own.
Morning, I agree with the last response. I would not rush out and purchase anything because if he is delayed and staying on a recruit base, he may not be permitted to have anything there. I know my son was told was you graduate, you may not come back on this base. He is staying in Greal LAkes but being moved to another place for some intense training before he leaves for Pensacola. GOOD LUCK!
Hi everyone. DeLane, as far as I know if you are not in classes, you can still talk on your cell phone and be on your laptop. I have a lot of girls with boyfriends in A school and their boyfriends are allowed to call everynight and be on their laptop as long as they aren't physically in a classroom. I have a webcam on my laptop. Thank goodness. You can also download skype for free and its like video and voice chatting.
Paula-yeah, it depends where Adam will stay while he is waiting for his classes, but also he could just give us his laptop and cell phone and we could ship it to him.
Well PIR is 15 days away for me! 10/17.
I'm getting really excited!!
Our son is at Corry Station (P'cola), he took his cell phone with him from GL (gave it to him at airport", and he had his laptop shipped once he was got an address. They are to kept locked up and can not be carried or used during duty hours, but after colors (taps) he is free to use them if not on duty. We had to get him an "air card" for the laptop because there is no access provided in the rooms. He is a CTN student.
Hi SusanR,
My son is also at Corry and is waiting to "class up" (right term?) for CTN. I'm curious about the air card you mentioned and what that is. Good luck to your son in his training.
Patsmom,
Take a look at www.clear.com We use Clearwire usb air card. It plugs into your computer and you can log on to the internet with it. We pay around $35 or $40 a month. Clearwire is the cheapest I have found for aircards.
The only downside is that cellular internet connections (Aircard, Verizon, ATT, etc) are really slow. If he's a gamer he will not be happy with the connection, and Skype doesn't work very well if you want to use video chat. There isn't enough bandwidth.
Thank you for your help. And yes, he is a gamer. I think they all are :)
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.
If he's AO, your boyfriend will be at Pensacola NAS, which is a few miles south of Corry Station, where my son went to school. When my son was there this summer both bases allowed sailors to have/use computers and cell phones immediately. The hard part is getting internet service. It's available for a fee in some barracks but not others.

Normally he could go to the NEX the day he arrives to buy a laptop, but the two bases share an NEX, and it's at Corry Station. There is a bus that runs between NAS and Corry, he MIGHT be allowed to use that bus, since it is simply a shuttle between bases, he will have to ask.

There are computers he can use at the base Liberty Center and from there he can order one online from Dell or Apple, and have it shipped to him. It would be faster than waiting to phase up.

Regarding phasing up, it happens a lot faster at Pensacola bases than Great Lakes. Usually they phase up in two or three weeks, whether they are in class or not. When my son was at Corry Station he didn't have to start over at Phase I when he started school, but I think they do phase back at Pensacola.
Also, never buy a laptop for your sailor unless they ask you to do so. It will without doubt be the wrong one. They get picky about the bells and whistles, warranty, etc. They're twice as bad if they're gamers or going into electronics.
