Navy For Moms

I am wondering what to get my son for Christmas. He will PIR on Nov. 21 and will attend A school in GL. What would be some gift ideas that he can use and would be allowed to have?

Um.. I know this is gonna sound cheesy.. there are fast food places on base. McD's, Taco Bell, KFC, GNC store (gift certificates). I know they like something other than the galley food from time to time so thats cheap. I know there isnt a whole lot of room for things in their rooms so you need to take that into consideration. Maybe some toiletries, soap, razors, shampoo, deoderant is another thing so they don't have to spend money on that. Home baked goodies. Don't send anything too embarrasing.. they have to have things inspected before taking it back to their ship. A good watch is a great thing to have.. if they arent picky like my son is.. I swear it took us about 3 hours before he found something he really was happy with!!

I actually got my son a 13" DVD player. (sony) he loves it and can watch movies. We have sent him CD of family events that he can watch also. He is currently deployed and it's nice to get into his rack and put on a movie without having 50 guys around lol lol. When he was in A school we sent him a flat screen TV for his room. We included his XBox 360 and his games from home which he realy enjoyed using, when he left A school for his duty station he shipped it all back home. We have since shipped it out once again to his barracks where he is stationed.

Another thought in this vein - my son got a multi-media projector to go with his x-box 360 and computer. He can watch dvds on his computer or the xbox and with the projector can have a picture bigger than his 15" computer screen - it projects the image on a blank wall. He really likes it. The guys come to his BEQ to play games or watch movies. Also, I think it is a rather compact piece of equipment. But he just loves it - says it's the best investment he ever made.

Hi there, It was very nice to supply him with writing paper and pen set to include the stamps. I had no idea my Son could write so legibly after joining the Navy. (I am talking chicken scratch was the only way he wrote.) LOL, LOL But, the many letters he wrote to me showed me that he in deed had matured. I read the many letters from time to time and would crack up reading the stories that he had written so far being away from home. I would race to the mailbox like a football player weekly waiting to read his next letter. He even drew pictures to give me a better idea. Trust me writing paper, pen set and plenty of stamps!!!!!!

Donna, If he is staying at GL, there is Gurnee just north of there. What about movie passes, restaurant gift certificates. If you want to know what movie theaters are located there let me know. Pat

Go to the web and click on Lake County Ill. There is all kinds of info there about the area your son is in.
There are several Malls up there and you might possibley be able to find out what kinds of restaureants they have. I know the one at Gurnee has a Ruby Tuesdays. Its where my son and I ate after graduation.

My folks were overseas so they didn't send anything to Glakes for me. But I did get a quilt for my rack for myself, and I never had enough books. My sailor friend who was deployed wanted a camelbak waterbottle as his issue camelbak had been stolen. Watches are nice too, but there used to be regs about what could be worn. I'd have to look up the current regs, my info is a little dated. Some things never change ... homemade goodies are terrific.

It all needs to be portable, and easily shipped back home if they go to a ship and don't know how much room they will have.

Gift cards are brilliant, Pat. Is that the same mall in Gurnee that was there in 1980?

Anti M, Not the same mall. This is a huge outlet mall, relatively new. The area has also grown tremendously with restaurants, stores, and movie theaters. Everytime I go there, I see so many sailors enjoying a little down time. Pat

Excellent, although the old mall wasn't so bad.

I searched for Navy memorabilia. I found a gentleman in Germany who had a Gov. issued Navy watch. His Mom was a Nurse in Germany back in the 1960's and this watch had been left to her by a sailor that she met there. It was very cool to be able to get this watch. I took it to a jeweler and had it opened up and worked over good before giving it to my son. Also now he has something he will look at many times a day and hopefully think about me! Plus i kept the packaging it was sent in from Germany. Hopefully this will become a great family keepsake for my son.
