Navy For Moms

I just added a powerpoint presentation to my blog and to this post (see below). I received this earlier this year from a friend in the biz. Due to a million and one other things going on I never got around to posting it but I got a comment on my blog this morning which reminded me I had wanted to. This is a powerpoint presentation so just tap the space bar to move forward to each new slide.

While this is geared towards those in the industry or military, it is valuable for family members and friends to be aware of as well! You can be approached just as easily as they can!

Hope this is educational! We are using it for our fall briefings this year.

Absolutely awesome! While this sort of stuff is drilled into our heads, this presentation really drives home the point. This should be a sticky so it never gets lost. Thank you for sharing and I will also be sharing it in my organization, too.

I am glad you liked it! Security Awareness is one of my responsibilities at work and there are some great presentations out there. It seems like a "no brainer" for folks who grew up in it but for folks who have never had to deal with it I thought it would be a good reference for them when they try to ask their sons questions and they don't get answers like they used to.

A typical dinner conversation at our family table goes something like this (word for word):

My Dad to my Brother: So...are you working on that..."thing"?
Brother: Which "thing" ?
Dad: The "thing" they want to use "there" (this is actually what is said)...
My Mom: I thought they were using it ... somewhere else...
Brother: Oh...no...that is the OTHER "thing".
Dad: Oh...THAT thing. Are you working on THAT?
Brother: Yeah.

And I have had people call me on my cell and say..."Well...we are sort of...um...at the zoo and the giraffe handler is sick so we can't get in the pen to..err..clean the cage". And I have to answer, "Well...perhaps the vet has a key to the cage and can let you in." Meanwhile my husband is looking at me like I am insane...he is the only one in the family without a clearance so after 11 years he is used to conversations about "stuff", "things" and "zoos"...but when he first came into the family he thought we were all a bit off our rocker.

This is amazing, and very alarming. I'm sending this to my family and friends. We certainly don't want to inadvertently endanger any of our military men and women. This is a powerful message. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know if anything has changed since I was in the Navy, but it used to be that we could not talk about what submarines were going to be coming in for the next few days, nor what submarines were in port vs at sea.

Meanwhile, about three days before a sub returned at the main base gates there were a huge banners shouting "Welcome Home USS _________ SSN ___" and subs in port had banners on their gangways with their name and logo - clearly visible from the national park area above the base. Anyone who could read knew everything we did.

One time my tender went out on a secret operation with the USS Ohio, it was a historic event what we did, but we were ordered to not talk about it at all for 10 years (20 years ago) because the location of a boomer was so totally secret, and our at-sea capabilities were supposed to be secret. At one point we got an at-sea tour of the Ohio and many of us exchanged command ballcaps. So when we returned to port about 100 of us got off the ship wearing Ohio caps. Anyone with a brain could figure out the general vicinity of where the Ohio was at the time.
