Navy For Moms

my sons orders for A school were submitted incorrectly by his detailer. he held on for months, being patient. detailer admitted mistake way back when. when re-submitted, this time correctly ???(only god knows), he was told that there is no longer any funding due to government cutbacks. we know of others who have been told they are going to A school. would like to get to the "real facts" on this issue. I am concerned re my sons education, and this could be a real problem (of course).
he got congrats and the whole nine yards from everyone on his ship....and now months later, he is still at the same base w/ people asking "why is he stll there?"--anyone having similar problem?

My son is hearing rumors that he won't have an A school available when he graduates boot camp next week. Was your son heading for San Antonio to go to MA classes?

My son is having the same problem with "C" school. They keep changing it and his orders. He joined in 2005, but didn't get what he wanted so after 3 years they sent him to VA to the new "A" school where he finished in the top 3 and was supposed to go to "C" school- at first it was to be in Jan, then Feb, anyway to make a long story short he's still waiting to get into "C" school and was told recently that he won't start until Sept. He has a wife and 3 children in San Diego and is sitting in a holding co. and can't come home, just stuck in VA.

If anything, I understand your frustration as we are going thru' the same thing!

Let us know what happens with your son.

It is so tough to hurry up and wait. Sometimes that is how the Navy works. It has got to be really hard on your son with him on one coast and family on the other. I hope that something moves for him quickly and SOON!! My son didn't have to go through that. I had a daughter that went to Italy for 2 years and it was to count as sea duty but when so got to getting orders to come back to the states they told her it counted as shore duty instead. She really pushed the detailer and told him she had just given up 2 years with her son since he couldn't go with her and she wasn't doing to do 2 more. They ended up letting her have her last 2 years in as shore duty. She is finishing up her contract now. It can be frustrating for sure. Try to stay as positive as possible. Sometimes eaiser said then done.

Hi, I kinda know how you feel. My A made it through A School in TX, and then was sent to GA (he got to pick because he did so well on his finals). BUT....now he has been there for a month and.....is in a "holding pattern" as well. They keep putting off whatever he is supposed to be doing there, so he pretty much is just doing pt, laying around, and going to FL on weekends. Sounds nice, but I'm with the mom that said she hoped sailors don't get into too much trouble with all that free time! My son IS only 18 (won't be 19 for another 6 months) and I worry a bit!!!!

This same thing happened to our daughter - she finished boot camp on January 9 and was "on hold" until the end of March when she finally started A School - she's in Great Lakes right now. From what she tells me there are many sailors that have this same experience - tell your son to hang in there - eventually he will go to A School. It might help if he goes to the office (if he's at Great Lakes) where they place kids into school - I don't know what the name of the office is but I do know it's run by civilian employees, not Navy folks - and ask about his status - sometimes it helps to keep asking so they don't forget about you. Good luck and you and your son are in my prayers! Ingrid

my daughter is in A school right now and she told us that even after she is finished with school she cannot leave GL until sometime in the fall due to funding cutbacks. She is also very frustrated. Your son is not alone.

I would say most of this is due to money and funding cutbacks. I have seen this happen before, many years ago. I just hope this does not come back to bite them in the butt. It has before..

My daughter had the same problem, Pensacola. They told her she could be there about 6 months, but after 2 months she got orders.

I was in the Navy in the late 70's/early 80's and the same kind of stuff happened, the situation is not new.

Many times when sailors are waiting for their school to class up, they are waiting until there is a full class. Just like at college. Colleges cut classes that do not have a minimum number of students enrolled. It's the same for military schools, it doesn't make financial sense to hold a class that does not meet the required minimum enrollment.

Of course funding plays a major roll on when classes are held. Your sailor will get the training that was promised in the contract they signed with the Navy, (it's a legally binding contract) the cavet is they will get the training on the Navy's schedule.

FYI, the holds for classes have nothing to do with regards to waiting for a class to fill out. All the "A" Schools have plenty of students.

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. .re the contract part. I fully appreciate your response, altho...at this point in time....I am sure the classes are then more than full, fortunately for our country.
this really appears to be a funding issue.
I also understand the contract/schedule thing. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
we are fortunate enough to have great family and navy contacts nearby.
