Navy For Moms

I just got a call from my daughter at boot camp. She could only talk for a minute but she said they are sending her home because she has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I know what PTSD is I don't really understand why she has it or how she has been diagnosed with it. But, what I would really like to know is...Is there anyone out there that can tell me what this means for her now? What will happen? Can she never go back? Will she be provided with counceling and or medication? or is she just out and on her own?

I think the 40% figure that you heard is probably from the statistic that 40% of those who join the Navy don't make it through a full term of service (their agreed-upon contract). That would include boot camp, A school, and active service discharge for medical reasons (including pregnancy), behavioral issues, AWOL, etc.
The percentage of recruits who make it through BC is about 82%. Of the 18% who don't make it about 4% are unable to pass the PT-2, so the odds are with most who join to make it through. I don't know how many are diagnosed with a mental stress disorder or are discharged for medical reasons from BC.
It is in the Navy's best interest to help recruits through; they spend a lot of money to transport, feed, and train them to be sailors.

Well, I have n weird one...today my son, who is in week 3 of BC received a letter from a gut that is/was in his ship/division. It was addressed to him at our home address. I was concerned so I opened it. This person said "it must be great being out of there.". I am concerned he has been let go and we don't know it yet. Anyone have another explanation I might have?

Did you read it correctly. If he is out, then where could he be. They don't let the parents know this stuff. What is going on with that letter.

I would suggest you call the recrutier. Many of the recruits like playning jokes on each other and families. Your sons recruiter can tell you if he is in GL or not. Don't give up until you get an answer. Good luck.Mattsmom/Brenda

Sounds like it could be a prank. But it may not be. I know my daughter was really upset when she called and told us what was going on because she felt like a failure and was afraid she was a disappointment. Of course we reassured her that we are still proud of her and that this is not her fault but she still feels bad and if they are sending your son home he could feel the same way and may be afraid to tell you. they are telling us it will take two weeks to get her home. She left her div and was put into ship 5 for processing. He could be there. If he is he has had access to phones and the Internet maybe you can tell if he has checked his myspace (it tells you the last login date) or email or voicemail on his cell phone. I know those were some of the first things my daughter did. Good luck and keep us informed.

I received a lettr from my son yesterday. He mentioned he was losing his mind. I know how confusing it could be for you. I've been crying for him, writing to him and I even tried to get some information from his recruiter. I feel I need to know what to expect. I am at a loss. He was supposed to graduate on 9/11. I know he'll get over this. The military is not for everyone. But I had hopped he would take the time to see the bigger picture. I will pray for you and your daughter.
