My son will spend Christmas at bootcamp. Is there anything we're allowed to send him other than a card or letter??

Donna, the only time the Sailors can come home after PIR is when they graduate before or around the weekend of Christmas and Thanksgiving. Other than that what you were told by the recruiter is the case.

It is not a good idea to send Christmas cards or postcards. Basically, do not send anything other than a letter otherwise they stand out.

I'm sending Christmas Cards, and everyone else is sending them to her as well. We sent Thanksgiving Cards too. Doesnt seem to be a problem with my kids division. I've sent postcards too and once again not a problem. I've even sent musical cards - her RDC's listened to them and laughed with her. I'm thinking it depends on the division and the RDC's. Glad my kids got the RDC's she's got.

I'd like to pose a question....what if a kid in the division is consistently NOT getting letters and another kid consistently IS getting letters?? Doesnt that make the one getting the letters stand out??

My son left on Dec 9th and we had a celebration on the 7th that was our Christmas eve, we had a few presents and family and opened some champagne and had him put the sailors hat atop the tree that was part of the decorations at his going away party -- it was a big charge for all his family and now as he is not here for the holidays the sailors hat sits on top of our tree for him. See you all at graduation in February--Rene

Call your sons recruiter on Wednesday...he may have it by then. My kids recruiter had it a week after she left. It cant hurt to ask. And if he doesnt have it, tell him you'll check with him again friday....

Thanks so much! I have his recruiters card. My older son was an Army Scout and was at Ft.Knox for his basic training in 2001. I did get a call from him 2 days after he arrived there. It was brief but at least it was something. They then sent me a letter with his address about 7 days later. He was then sent to Korea. He's returned home from Iraq in the summer of 2006. My husband and my son were both in Iraq at the same time. Now my youngest has joined the Navy to be a Corpsman....here we go again. I'm very familiar with the "Army's" ways of doing things but the Navy is all new to me. last year was the first Christmas everyone was home together since 2000.
