Navy For Moms

My daughter's 1st grade class is writing letters to on our sailors and wants to know the correct way for the salutation on the letter.

Not only is this a writing lesson for the children, she wants to instill the respect in the letters that our sailors deserve.

Hmmm.... Looks like the reply editor took out all the tabs.

Best bet is to go directly to the NAVY CORRESPONDENCE MANUAL online at : http://tinyurl.com/2h6ysy

Look in Appendix A, pages A-1 and A-2.

If you are addressing a certain person you address it the way that Lady Hamilton wrote.

If the letters are written to any sailor, you don't know the paygrade of the person getting the letter. I would recommend addressing them:

Friend, Sailor, or My Hero.

First advice: the navy has no soldiers. Only sailors :) Soldiers are Army, Marines are Marines, airmen are Air Force.

Ah, but here's where the Navy jumps in and makes it all so confusing: For pay grades E1 - E3 the Navy does have Airmen, plus Seamen, Firemen , Constructionmen and Hospitalmen! Unless you know a Sailor's 'community', paygrade or the the color of the stripes on his/her sleeve you can't be sure of the 'correct' salutation. That's why Hoppi's suggestion makes sense. 'Correct' for a Yeoman who has to know the Navy Correspondence Manual is not the same as 'correct' for a 1st grader.

Please thank your daughters teacher for doing this! I think it is GREAT!!! When I was deployed I got letters from children. Some put pictures in with them. It really hit home what we (military) do when you get a letter from a child, thanking you for what you do.

The children are our future!

Hi Hoppi! Haven't read you for a while, have you been on vacation (LOL). We've missed your wisdom, welcome back.
