Can someone please tell me what their experience has been with a son/daughter who has deployed for few months via ship? How long does it take to hear from them?

Thanks Lesli & Juli for the info on the military flat rate boxes for care packages. I will check the website.

Hey Michelle--

Just wanted to let you know about my experience sending care packages....my fiance is out on the Nimitz, and I have sent him a package a month since he deployed in August....the first one took 18 days....the 2nd one he got in about 9-10 days (they either just had pulled into port, or had just left port)...this last one I sent 3 weeks ago and he still hasn't received it...and from the looks of it, they won't be pulling into port again for another 2 or so weeks....

The flat rate boxes are the best and cheapest option...I think it's about $12 to send one (and that included insurance).....I stock up on extra boxes and the customs forms the PO requires you to fill out and take care of all of that mess at home so it's a quick in and out trip at the PO. Also, I would recommend putting your address and his address on a piece of paper inside the box as a precautionary measure. The folks at the PO were quite helpful my first go round since I had never mailed anything to a military address...so use them as a resource as well.

Good Luck :-)

Hi Julie,
What is up with this 'any sailor program?' Like at Christmas you can send things in the boxes that you can get from the post office or Ups? I would love more info.
Thanks
Adrienne

Hi Andrienne, Yes, you can send packages through the post office. You can go on line and the post office will send you all kinds of boxes and forms for free.

My son, now on Hawaii, spent his first three years on a ship ported in Yoksuko, Japan. He was on the Chancellorsville, for a year ,then they did a crew swap to the USS Shiloh. He is an Logistics Analyst, formerly SK,Storekeeper. He would be at sea anywhere from three weeks to three months was thier longest at sea. Cell phones do not work on ships, but he would use the ship to shore phone to call home when he had time. However, we could be in the middle of a sentence, and the phone could cut out at any time. I would use his Navy e-mail address, he had no access to his private e-mail, but as others have said, sometimes the e-mail would be down for several days or there was something going on there would be these black out periods with no communication.
He could have very long works days while on the ship, and he was also a rescue swimmer, so he had additional duties while at sea, adn did not have time to get in touch.

Thanks for the response Lynda...I have started hearing from him since yesterday, but by email from his navy address & also his personal email to my cell phone address. However, I believe that the email maybe slow - don't know for sure because he is mostly answering questions that I sent to him earlier, and is not answering the emails sent right away. He says he is doing fine - was a lil seasick at first but I think he is working all day. I was just glad to hear from him.

Thanks again...

The emails are slow, because an IT reads all incoming and outgoing messages to make sure that nothing is sent that can compromise security. Sometimes email I sent wouldn't arrive if I sent pictures attached. I found out that if I only sent one photo at a time, he would get those.

Hi My son was previously deployed to Japan. He was out on his ship and out on land as well in that area. My son is not one for writing letters. I do communicate when he can connect to the internet. Does your son have an e-mail address? My son also uses Face Book so even if I do not hear from him I do see him on Face book. I pray this was helpful.
