Navy For Moms

Hello... This is my first time posting here, but I have been reading in the forums a lot. I made an account for my mom to use & so I could ask some questions that has kind of been bothering me... I signed up for FTS Reserves and my classifications is AS. I leave for boot camp on November 3rd & I'm excited but kind of scared also :-). My recruiter told me that if I signed up for FTS I would be stationed back here in the Houston area... is that true? I had googled it and read that there is no guarantee that I would be sent back here... so I really wanted to ask someone who has been through it and knows for sure.

I also wanted to ask about dependents. My mother is a disabled veteran and she has epilepsy. I have been living with her and taking care of her when she gets too sick. I wanted to know if I would be able to claim her as my dependent, and if so when would I do that? My recruiter told me that I wouldn't be able to start the process until after I got to A School. I know sometimes that the recruiters wouldn't want to change anything because it might delay you or it would mean more paperwork for them, but I really needed to know the answer so that I can make the right steps. She has told me that she wants to come to Florida while I'm in A School.

Thank you for your help,

Imani

Jaimonay, I do not know anything about dependents in the military, but if she has something like SS benefits, she may be eligible for a homemaker, someone to come in an help her, or just a home aid, these are available to many people. You could also get her something called a lifeline. She wears it at home like a necklace, and if she isnt feeling well she can just push the button, they come to your home and set it all up for you. My mom has seizures too, and it makes her feel secure and she lives alone. They can set up a calling list for her and they will make the calls, its fairly inexpensive about 32.00 a month and it may give you both peace of mind. She will have instant access to help. It may be something to look into to until you can get the dependent care set up. Best of luck to you and your mom.

I would get ahold of the DAV person at the VA and talk with them. I think they might be able to answer your questions regarding your mom.

The DAV can also make sure your mom is getting every VA benefit she is entitled too. Like a caregiver, etc.

Hi and welcome..My son is FTS, when he signed it was called TAR, so you may find more info that way.. my son is in WA and right after A school was at his duty station and 2 months later deployed!!!!! You are a fully active sailor and can be stationed anywhere and sorry to say you will not be picking your duty station! I don't mean this to sound cruel just what I know from my son's sitution!!! I have asked other Sailors, retired who were in the TAR-now FTS progarm and they cannot explain the change in the program!! but you are still listed as a "reservist" and can work at any base- reservist too!!!! Just ask LOTS of questions and then ask some more!
good luck!

PS..As far as A school goes...You are limited to your travel! You must gain your "phases" through A school...1-2-3- and with each phase you get a "little"...such as...aloud to where "civis" civilian clothes all the way to leaving the base for the day for some R and R but weekend passes are ???able...
Once again Good LUCK!!!
