Navy For Moms

Hi all,
I just returned from Norfolk, VA where I was on the pier to welcome my son home from deployment. I know how impressive the graduation from boot camp is, but let me tell you, being there for him when he got off his boat is even better. This was his 3rd deployment on the USS Albany, I missed the first homecoming - his dad went. I was there two years ago and vowed I would never miss another. The energy of love and pride on the pier is amazing - all these people are there to welcome back every member of the crew!!!!! I encourage you to do what ever you can to be there to welcome your child back on their return. I then spent a few lazy, relaxing days with my son just hanging out. These times with him are so precious that I would not trade them for anything. God Bless all of our Sons and Daughters that are serving our country!!!!! And God Bless their parents!
Thanks for listening,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
My son returned in October 08 from his first deployment on the USS Abe Lincoln. I totally agree with everything you said...I thought BC graduation was awesome, but there is something very special about being there to hug your sailor and welcome him home. I was so proud and held him so long and tight...trying to hold back my tears, but then the dam burst and it felt so good to cry tears of joy, happiness, relief, love. There are no words to express how wonderful it feels. The best is our sailors feel the same too....they know how much they have been missed and how much they are loved.....it is a wonderful moment. I was lucky to spend time with my sailor for a week just hanging out too. After being out to sea for 7 mos, relaxing in a hotel and just hanging out without a schedule was heaven!! Smiles....Andrea

Lisa, I was also there last week to welcome my son home who just recently joined the USS Albany. It was a very moving experience for me. I cried most of the time I was there. At first my husband and I told our son we wouldn't be able to make it (it was very last minute that we got info because he just joined the sub a few weeks ago). My husband is not allowed vacation days at work during November and December. But at the last minute we decided to go, and we don't regret one minute of it. It was a very long ride to Norfolk and back home, and we were only able to see my son for about an hour, but it was well worth it. Everyone should try to see it just once. I'll never forget it!!

Lisa, we went ot San Diego the 1st of the month to see our grand daughter's husband come back from a 6 month deployment and I can agree there is nothing like it, even in the cold rain!! The big whstle is sounded just before they came into view and what looked like sub nets or something in the water was moved by a tug and there is this huge boat with U.S. NAVY SAILORS MANNING THE DECKS WITH THE BEAUTIFUL AMERICAN FLAG WHIPPING IN THE WIND!! It brings tears to my eyes now and joy to my heart. And his little boy, 16 months old, thought this person might be ok, mom seems to like him!! And God Bless our military men and women, they are the best in the world!!

Hi Lisa~ My son has been on three 6 month deployments. I have been at almost all of his send-offs as well as homecomings, but will not go down to San Diego for his last homecoming on this boat. He's been in the Navy for 6 years and got married last year. He did not ask me NOT to come, but he has barely seen his wife in the last year since they were married, and she is working in a different state and only has a week off. Over these last six years I have grown along with my son and our relationship is deeper and better than ever. I know we will get to see each other soon after this last deployment ends. I have had many emotions during this last deployment before shore duty orders come in and I thank you for posting this discussion. I haven't shared this with anyone yet and am so grateful to have a forum to share. On a lighter note, during one homecoming, my son and I were on the evening news! We got a copy from the station and it was cool!

Yes, Homecomings are the greatest feeling. I have been to 2 so far. The first one I really thought I had my sights on my son and kept yelling out 'that's him, that's him'. I kept wondering why he would not acknowledge me. Well, it turns out that my son was on the other end of the ship, and he was watching me the whole time. He had his chief next to him and they had a good ole laugh. Well, on the second one my daughter actually got to go on the Tiger Cruise the day before they came into the Homecoming port. So, they were both watching me to make sure I located the right son. I made sure I did not yell out until I knew for sure it was him. But, it sure is a time for happy tears to flow.
