My daughter graduated 9/18/09. I stayed in the Comfort Inn in Gurnee and it was great. The price was reasonable, it was clean, the staff was great and the hotel is a parking lot away from a big mall (which was a plus for my daughter!). It as also easy to get back and forth to the base- not too complicated to navigate in a rental car without a gps (which I recommend even though it was an added expense I was not so sure about).

Did you take the hotel shuttle to PIR? Also how far in advance did you make your reservation?

I made my reservations about 3-4 weeks in advance- my flight I made way earlier praying hard that she would graduate as scheduled! I don't think that hotel had a shuttle- but you could ask- many of them do. It was a stretch for me to rent a car (financially) but it really, really made life easier because you have to get your sailor back to base and if we had to wait for/pay for a taxi every time it would have been very nerve wracking! Hertz was reasonable with my AAA discount.
