Navy For Moms

How long before you will hear from your new recruit at boot camp?

I was wondering if I could hear from some of the moms regarding contact with their son or daughter after they left for Boot Camp. My daughter is leaving on August 4th for Great Lakes. I have read alot of the forum notes on here which has been very helpful regarding alot of things we both knew nothing about, but I am wondering when will I hear from her after she arrives. I heard I will get a phone call that she is there, I will receive a box of her clothes she wore and that it will be atleast 3 weeks before any further contact. I know she will be in good hands, but hearing some stories of how others dealt with this and the actual time before contact might make me a little less ancy,,, (doubtful) Thanks for any comments to help me have a better idea.

With my son, he arrived on May 28 and called home quickly.(short call). Then he was able to call on June 6, June 22, July 6 and July 9. His division earned calls. Each division is different. Some only get 1 or 2 calls the whole time and then some are like my son's who called 4 times. Then they get to call after their battle stations. And my son's calls came on any day and any time. So keep your phone with you.

I hope she gets to call you often. Just remember to send lots of letters. I wrote my son every day and he really enjoyed hearing from home, even if what I wrote was mundane and to me seemed boring, he loved it.

When my son first left, I thought I couldn't take it, but it got a little easier with time.. GOOD LUCK!!
My son left on 7/9 I also received the short "Hi Mom I made it safetly" phone call, about 30 seconds long. I received his box 6 days later and just received his graduation information yesterday with a short note.

It is very hard not hearing from them, but I also write everyday. It's the little things that will get you through(i have learned so far) the short call, the box, the little note. I was estatic to receive his box, until I realized he just sent me more dirty laundry :).

Hopefully he will be able to call soon
My son also left on Jul 9 . What ship and Div is he? Mind is in Ship 14,Div 306.

My son just left for bootcamp July 16, 2012. We, too, received a quick call saying he made it safely.  He sounded really good...definatley NOT as nervous as when he left..but I am very anxious to hear from him again.  You mentioned you got his graduation information. What types of info came with that?  I am hoping you hear from your son soon, too.... I know how eager I am to hear from my son.

My son left for bootcamp on June 25th. We got the short call home that he was there, the box and then I did receive a call July 7th (12 days) asking for information for his clearance. He could not talk other then yes he was ok and it was not what he expected. That left me curious. Then we received a wonderful letter from him July 16th (3 weeks) and I got a call from him yesterday July 20th. We talked about a 1/2 hour and then he called his dad for about 10 minutes. It was wonderful. Before you know it you will hear from her.

My daughter left July 7 and she took her cell phone with her so she texted and called all the way there so that kind of helped when my son left six years ago he didn't bring his so there was no contact until that short 30 second phone call when he arrived. Also she had to call twice because she needed info for her security (she is going into IT) so I talked to her once, the other time she talked to her brother. The only other contact is the box with her things and the form letter no real letter or phone calls yet. But is has only been 2 weeks. So having said all that make sure she brings her cell phone it does help and it gets sent home in the box and she can leave a text message for you on the phone.
I don't think you can give an exact time frame. My call from my daughter 3 weeks ago letting me know she made it to RTC safe was short and sweet. Hi I made it. 1-2 weeks get form letter, 3-4 weeks get to call probably. bye I love you....thats it. Its been a very long 3 weeks but hoping soon....I guess they can start earning phone calls, some parents got calls because they needed info from home for security purposes. We should have not been so diligent and I might would have got a call.....
My son arrived in Chicago yesterday. He had his cell phone with him so I was able to talk to him for several minutes when the plane landed. That was at 3:00 yesterday and I have not heard from him since - no short phone call. I don't know if this is normal.

I don't think that is typically the norm, and I didn't get one either. My son called me from the OKC airport before departure, and I was expecting the quick call when he got to GL, but never got it. I feel robbed!! LOL!! I don't know why he wouldn't have called but I'm just going to assume that all is well. My son left August 2nd. Have you heard anything from your son yet?

Don't worry if you don't get the "Hi Mom, I'm here!" phone call. There are hundreds of new recruits and not that many phones so some of them don't get around to making the call before they're whisked off to start the first 24 hours of Navy-dom.....clothes, shots, food, yelling, no sleep etc. The "kid-in-a-box" should arrive within a few days. Then you'll get an official letter from the Navy thanking you for sending them your child (?LOL). At the bottom of the last page will be 3 lines that your kid will be able to write to you. This letter will also contain his/her official address. If you call the recruiter a couple of days after they leave, he'll have an address for you before you get the official one. When your recruit writes the first letter home chances are the address will be slightly different and you'll panic because you've been sending letters to one or the other addresses mentioned before. Don't panic! This is normal and your kid will have received all your letters OK. Just send the rest to the return address he/she prints on the envelope. You should get your first letter on a Wed. or Thurs. (depending where you live) about week 2 or 3.
Hi ladies I got the 30 sec call last Tuesday Evening. Thanks to this site I was prepared for it. After we hung up I realized that was the last time he would sound like a kid. My letters are gathering up and ready to ship when i get the mailing address. They realy have be comforting. I teased in the last letter the best thing about writing letters I get the last word. Ha ha. We'll see.

Numbering the letters (if you haven't already) will help your son know which letter to open 1st, 2nd, and so on. Don't stress if you can't remember which is which. He'll figure it out.
