Is continuing college while on active duty possible?

I really want to join the navy and have pretty much made up my mind to do this. After all your replies Im comfortable with my decision, but still, Im concerned that it will be hard to continue college and graduate with my bachelors and so forth is going to be hard or impossible...do any of you have sailors who are on active duty and continuing their education? or anyone who did this themselves? My degree is super important to me and I do not want to join the navy and get out to then get out with no degree.

i know my boyfriend tried to do classes and active duty at the same time and he said it was really the hardest thing to try to balance all of it. it could be different for the Navy then the Army; but it is totally possible. the navy is a lot better about educating their soldiers then other branches.

Flozano,
Any decision? Do you feel positive enough to give Navy a go? Best of luck.

Yes, and the Navy pays for it

The Navy did not pay for the books and the material needed for my son classes while he was on deployment. I had to ship him everything he needed... But, he was able to take 6 classes while being deployed for 6 months.

The same is true of NCP classes that are paid for with the $4000 in Navy tuition assistance: They only cover tuition, not books or other fees. Its a small price to pay for the education gained.

Yes, I understand that, but I was just saying that not everything was paid for. Yes it is a small price, I agree!!! But it wasnt free!!!!

I am a Navy wife, mom, and aunt. I also work for an online college. I will not tell you which school - but I will tell you that we have students who are active duty. There are students attending our online school who are stationed on ships, and stationed in Iraq. Getting your degree while serving your country is a possibility. I commend you not only for joining the Navy, but also for realizing the importance of obtaining your degree.

Depending upon the program you are interested in, an excellent on-line college is Capella University. I am 50 years old and finally finishing my bachelors degree! Check it out!

My husband did his classes online thru Excelsior College while he was active duty. It must be approved thru your chain of command and all paid for and you will get college credits for some of your miltary service. Also some place I read where they can not charge active duty no more than 50.00 per book.

One of the dads my husband chats with on NavyDads was telling him that his son (also a CTN) just signed in at his new assignment and one of the the 1st things he did after getting settled in was to start his college classes, his PO even helped get signed up for the college classes. So yes it can be done.

Taking classes did not work for my SeaBee, he was here 7 months, gone 7 months, and worked 6-7 12 hours days in a row, so study was out of the question. He did get a degree after leaving active duty, stayed reserve for the monthly paycheck, was able to work summers, bank the money, take the GI Bill $$ and not have to work during the school year. He tried an online class for teaching licensure while in UAR last Spring, didn't work bacause of the time difference, hard to do discussion group when you are 6 hours ahead.

Our son joined the Navy over five years ago with a couple of years of community college under his belt. He was an airman working on P3's. He was encouraged to go back, and was eventually tapped for STA21. He was sent back to complete his degree. He graduated and commissioned last year and is learning to fly now! He has said he knows there will be further opportunities for ongoing education. He intends a masters degree in the years to come.
