Navy For Moms

Hello everyone. I was hoping to get some feedback from some of you. My son graduated from boot camp recently and has been in "A" school in Mississippi. We live in Maine. He has worked extremely hard to make Honor Graduate. If he keeps his grade point average he will make it. He only has technically 9 days left. He has never been away from home and being a single mother we have a very close relationship. He has keep me informed all through this process. I have been extremly supportive as I am former active duty Air Force. So finally to get to my question. He has just been informed that his position and squad have been placed on "hold" and he may have to stay in Mississippi for an additional 5 months. Basically doing ground maintenance. He basically had the wind let out of his sails and is extremely discouraged. He seems to have lost his motivation to keep working as hard as he has been. He was so looking forward to graduating and going to his perminant station in Viriginia. Any words of wisdom that I can give him to keep his chin up? Thank you!!

Thank you so much for the feedback. My son has graduated (with Honors) and is home on leave. He will be going to his perminant station in Norfolk in two weeks. All your thoughts and wishes certainly did help. I wish you all well and thank you for serving this country.

That five months is a maximum guesstimate... real orders will most likely come along sooner than that. Seen that over and over on this board; sailors told not PCSing until October then they get orders in a few weeks.

Anti M is right, they may tell him 5 months but I bet it happens sooner than that. Tell him to keep trying and you and all of us on Navy 4 Moms are proud of him!!

I agree completely, there is alot of speculation/rumors but keeping your son on hold for five months - will cost the Navy money as well. Many sailors that have been told similiar things have been seeing orders and even more should open up as we get close to the new fiscal year. Tell him to hang in there and keep doing a great job - lots of sailors are dealing with this same situation. It's temporary.

Sharon;
Tell your son to keep up the good job he has been doing. If he already has PCS orders to VA he will most likely report as he planned. Did he hear this information from someone that knows, or someone else in his unit just speculating. Virginia is a big Navy Command, there could be any numbers of reasons he is being delayed.
In any event he wants to be able to show the receiving command he is a go-getter and dependable sailor. What is his rate?

The very worst thing he can do is to look and act discouraged. His attitude throughout all this will tell his superiors what kind of sailor he is. Remember, nothing in the Navy is definite, even when it is, it isn't. He needs to hang in there and do the best job he can no matter how long he has to wait.

Sharon everyone is right my son graduated boot camp May 1st. His scholl was suppose to start May 17th, when he arrived he was told they had a shortage of instructors and his school was on hold for nine months. He was doing ground maintance up til last week. He starts his A school next week. Things are always changing in the navy and tell your son to keep his chin up, think postive and be proud of his accomplishment as we are proud of him.

Thank you so much for all your comments. I'm hoping he will call me tonight (cell phone reception stinks, he has to stand on a hill!). I will pass on your advice. Thanks again!! Our children are very important to us and they are doing a great job for this country and everybody that lives here. I wish all your children well and a safe adventure!

Hey Sharon!! I am new to NFM & just rarn across your note. Thought I'd chime in. I'm a single mom too & have a daughter on the Reagan. She did her basic at Great Lakes,ILL & her A school there too. She had a long wait to find out where her duty station would be too. Same thing. She got very discouraged and thought it was because maybe she didn't do as good as she thought she did. All of her friends had gone. She was told she'd be going to either Virginia or Japan - and surprise!! She got to come to Calif. (where we live) and ended up on the Reagan. So, tell that sailor of yours to hang in there - he'll be fine. Hoo Yah!!!! I'll send a friend request to you, if that's o.k. Mary Kay/Proud Navy Mom/calif.

Sharon, tell your son not to be discouraged, but I know what you are going through.......I too am a single mom and my Sailor is my only child and we too are very close.......now we talk sometimes 3 or 4 times a day.......anyway.....he is set to graduate on Friday of this week and will probably be put on Hold also, but he says it shouldnt be more then a few weeks. I hope the same for your son.
My son is possilbly going to his Duty Station in Hawaii, so he has been told.

Hi Sharon - one of the things I've learned from having two kids in the Navy is that nothing is for sure until it happens. My daughter did not get her final orders until minutes before she was commissioned - and not only did location change, but so did the community! Her orders to surface warfare school changed 24 hours before she was due to depart. She has been on limited duty, returning to active duty, and the ship to which she has been assigned has changed twice! I flew to Hawaii to see her ship return from deployment, only to have it laid up in Washington for repairs, not to return until after I had gone home. There's a certain amount of flexibility (OK a huge amount of flexibility) that is part of the process. Learning to accept it (for both parent and sailor), and live with it is all part of the deal. The first time it happens, it's a real disappointment. It gets easier over time, but it will happen again, and your son will have to learn to live with it in order to be successful. One of the harder lessons, IMHO

Sharon, My son graduated from boot camp on 5/1 and was supposed to leave for A school in San Diego on 5/5, well that didn't happen. He is still in Great Lakes. He just finished SCC training there which was about 2 weeks and was told that he would be leaving for San Diego on 6/8. Well that didn't happen either. Now they told him he would leave on 6/19 and start A school on 6/22. We will see if that happens. He is so bored and says that all they do is clean. He just wants to get on with his career. I told him at least he is getting a pay check and to rememmber the Navy motto Hurry Up And Wait.My sons recruiter told us that PCS is being held up and alot of them won't get that until October.

APRIL,
My son PIR on 6/19, is now on medical hold at RTC waiting transfer to Main side for SCC. His hold is longer than SCC would have been!
He's in good spirits, and can't wait for that dr. appt on 7/16. He doesn't know now if his orders will change or not--he is due in San Diego on Aug 20. He probably won't get his two weeks leave if his current orders stand.
He does know that every job is important, and as section leader, he's got a good crew, and they all work together. Everything happens for a reason! Hope things went well for your son!
