My daughter is a DEP and was in a traffic accident that was her fault...

My daughter is a DEP and was in a traffic accident last night where she was sited for failing to yield on a right on red. It's a minor offense and nobody was hurt. She was sited and is scared to death that she will not be allowed to join the Navy. Does anyone know what the rules are in this area?

She will still be able to join the Navy. IfIf she won't need a security clearance and there was not booze or hit and run of some other type of major offense she will be fine.
If she is going to lose her license ( because of points not a major offense) she may have problems with a security clearance later on, ( or if she is going to have a job that requires a drivers license) but she will have the oppurnity to explain to them.
Make sure she discloses to her recruiter.
My son had a few tickets (not major offenses) befor and after he completed the bootcamp and he was fine on everything. (including his security clearance)

Thanks Steve's Mom...she called her recruiter last night within 1 hour of the accident. We are in Arizona and because she has never had a ticket or citation before she will have the opportunity to attend a defensive driving class which then means the ticket will not count points on her insurance and her insurance will not go up. Her recruiter told her he would need a copy of the accident report and citation and he would send that on to MEPS.

Your daughter should be fine as long as she discloses everything. Traffic tickets aren't a huge problem, as long as they are paid for on time. They are more worried about criminal activity or "moral turpitude" issues; crimes that reflect poor decision making or violent or destructive actions.

Thank you for your reply Arwen. Your information is good to know. She is all freaked out that she's got no future with the Navy, because of an accident.

The key here is honesty with the recuriter. YOu don't want them to find out some how else. this is a good lesson for her on how the Navy works. Glad to hear no one was hurt. good luck to her.

Thanks Denise 2. Well, I guess since she called her recruiter within 2 hours of the accident...the honesty thing is covered. So, we'll go on from here I guess.

My son did the same thing...he got into an accident on a wednesday and was leaving for bootcamp on Monday. He wasn't paying attention and ran through a stop light and someone hit him, obviously it was his fault, plus the truck he was driving didn't have insurance ( not his). We just had to get the ticket taken care of as soon as possible. We talked to the police officer and he put the ticket through as quickly as he could, not sure how they do that. We went to the court house and paid the fines to get them closed. If it was your daughters fault, they will make her sign a paper stating she admits it was her fault, then they make you pay the fine. DEP's cannot leave with any outstanding tickets....they need to be taken care of right away. Good luck and hope everything goes well for you and your daughter.
