Navy For Moms

It just dawned on me that most moms, have alot of the same questions, so I thought I would put this out there it might help. First go to this site, it has GRADUATION DATES http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/family/upcominggrad.html it will update just about weekly sometimes they get busy and get behind. Spend some time on this site, you will find answers to alot of questions.

PHONE CALLS: you will get one right when they leave that says hi mom I am here Click. Very short but you know they are safe. You will get another around week 3 or so ( this varies on the command ), you may get a third right at the end.

ADDRESS: you will get their address about two weeks in. Remember to be writing letters while you wait for it, that way you can send a bunch right in the beginning.

GRADUATION PACKET / INFORMATION: around week four you will get a packet from your sailor/command, verifying grad date, and some information for hotels, a pass for your car window.

PICTURES: This is just a suggestion from me. When your sailor first leaves remind them what kind of pictures you want, also order video ( of graduation ) and a copy of the keel - yearbook, I have had two kids go thru bootcamp the keel is hard to get after the fact. Really a cool book worth the money.

Hopefully this will help a lot of moms upfront. Don't worry your not crazy. We all have had a hard time with our kids leaving, I can say it does get WAY better once they are in the navy. My kids call me ALL the time. You will find your sailor will appreciate family alot more when they are on their own. Good luck, if you ever need a shoulder this site absolutely ROCKS, the moms are very helpful and you won't feel so alone. Take care, Barb

Added note, I started this discussion it seems like years ago, when either my daughter or son went in I can't remember it has been so long. Its been we are on year two with our daughter. I know many of you new moms and dads are really worried. Happy thought for the day, I remember when I was crying EVERYDAY just like you probably are right now. It does get so much better, we have gone thru injuries, our daughter has met and married another sailor, and they are due in the spring with their first, our son has gotten the base of his dreams and is going to be married before the first of the year. Two years ago I would never have thought I would be at peace with this. And, I am a ex navy wife of many years. Have faith, so far 8 weeks of bootcamp may have been the worst 8 weeks of my life where my kids were concerned. It is almost as hard on us as them, in different ways. But looking back, its gets so much better and their adventures are just beginning. Good luck and god bless you all. For sharing your kids with us. They are well taken care of and the will make friends for life. As a footnote if anyone wants to get a reply or speak directly to me, please send me a comment as this discussion has grown so big I don't have time to read everything. God bless all of the parents out there that are sharing their kids with the rest of us. The adventure is just beginning.

My daughter is also in div 933 ship 06. For some reason finding others with children in her division makes me feel closer to her...crazy, huh? I checked the Navy Lodge and you have to have a Military ID or if you are a guest of someone in the military they must be present with you when you check in unless there is a way around that. BTW...have you received the graduation packed, yet? I am going stir crazy. I don't want to wait to make reservations, but I would really feel better hearing something official from the Navy. We haven't gotten our first real phone call from her and I won't leave the house in fear of missing it. From what I read it should be coming anytime! I sure hope so!

Hi there from an old salt....My daughter PIR'd the 30th of May, and we made reservations at Navy Lodge as soon as I found out her proposed PIR date. It's a relatively small hotel (150 rooms), so I'd advise getting reservations asap! They will book the room in you child's name (regulations); you'll need to know the division/ship#, social security# and when you get there, don't forget to say that the reservation is in Seaman Recruit such and such's name! They do get confused with all the going's on! Don't worry, the time will fly by after about 2 weeks...you'll be there before you know it! God Bless ya! Cheryl

Hi Tina...Liz is on Ship 06 Div 933. Do I have to wait for graduation info before I make reservations? Her proposed grad date is July 3rd. I don't want to wait until the last minute because of the holiday.

Vanessa,

She's in my son's division!!! Welcome aboard. We've started a PIR group. You need to come over and join us.

There are several others with kids in this division: Pam (Phillips's Mom), Bev J (Megan's mom), Nicole (Nick's Mom) and Sonia (Susy's mom).

Here's the link to the PIR group:
http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ship6div933pir7408

Many of us have already made reservations at the Navy Lodge for that week/weekend.

Does Liz have a birthday or anything during bootcamp? We are trying to send b-day cards to all "our" recruits (from the PIR group). Look at my blog to find names/addresses if you'd like to participate:

There will be a lively discussion of the PIR group tonight, but I don't think I'll be there. I worked 12 hrs today and have to work tomorrow, too. But just jump in and say Hi. Pam will greet you with open arms. Pam and I sorta started the PIR thing when we found out our sons were together. It's a GREAT bunch of moms.

We paid 45.00 a night booking on hotwire we were there May 22-27. The most expensive part was gas (375.00 total trip). It was cheaper to drive from Texas than to fly.

Thank you so much for this info. I NEVER thought of pictures. I'll let Cory know in my first letter (which I have been writting since the day he left)! How would I go about trying to contact mom's of recruits who would have arrived in Great Lakes May 22nd ?

Julie,
I started a forum called "Anyone with a child leaving for GL on May 5." We got lots of responses. Then we found out a graduation date, we started a PIR 7-3-08 group.

Welcome to the craziness that is bootcamp!!

Thank you for all of the information for new moms. My son Michael left yesterday & after a very long delay in his flight leaving Richmond, VA, I received that 15 second phone call at 11:22pm EST saying "Hi mom, I'm at RTC tell everyone I love them, gotta go, bye". I only got to say hello & goodbye. I didn't expect the call to be so short. I haven't yet had the opportunity to cry because I have to be the stoic one & help Dad, brother & fiance through Michael being gone. I'm really just numb & lost right now. I am so very proud of Michael's decision but miss hearing his voice every day 5 times or more a day. He has never been more than 5 miles away from me & now he is half way across the country. I have already started to write to him so that I can send all of my letters & his fiance's letters when we know where to send them. I look forward to the support I can get on this forum for at least the next 9 weeks.
Missing Michael,
Ruth

Ruth, I have a Michael too, he leaves for basic in July. I went to a retirement party tonight for a fellow teacher and when I walked out, there in front of me, big and proud, was the Battleship Massachusetts, known to us in the area as Big Mamie. (we live in Rehoboth, MA - the ship is in Fall River MA) I burst into tears! If your Michael is anything like mine, he is a strong young man. I am so used to having Mike around, I cannot imagine what it will be like when he goes. I think I will cry for days. It's so different than when my daughter went off to college, at least I can instant message her at night, or she can call whenever she wants, come home on weekends, etc. Best of luck, keep in touch.

My daughter leaves in a month and a half. I am so glad I found this site to help guide me. I didnt know anything about pictures until now, I will chat with Lisa about that. Other questions, when will she be able to have personal items? When will she know where she will be assigned after graduation? Where will she go for safety engineer training after graduation? As a travel nurse I can be in the same area as her if I know a few months ahead of time, probably won't happen but just thought I would ask. Thanks
