GrandMOM. Welcome to the military hurry up and sit and wait. My son went to boot camp last October and he has been in GL ever since. He has completed his A School but with being put on hold between classes he has been there a year. He did come home last year for Christmas because they closed the base and everyone had to leave. Right now my son is on hold waiting orders to be posted. I also talked to his recruiter and she said alot of people are on hold right now every where. You best information will come from your grandson. No one will know his plans expect him.

FYI, the base does not close, nor is everyone required to take leave.

Also, last year my son was part of the "Adopt A Sailor" program for thanksgiving. Local organizations adopt sailors for the holidays so they don't have to stay on base. Have him check into that. At least he will have a place to go. Last year my son went with a group affiliated with a VA post. He had a great time. They were givin calling cards to call home, cameras for them to take pictures, they went to a movie, then went back to the post and had a big thanksgiving dinner. The organization that adopted him developed the film and sent the pictures home to us. It was a great gift at such a needed time. Hang in there. I haven't seen my son since January. I know it's not easy but we do survive and we have to for them.
