Navy For Moms

I was just wondering if you moms remember how your children prepared physically for bootcamp. I am working out a lot and going to PT weekly but I was just wonder what your children did to prepare. All answers are appreciated.

I hired a personal trainer for my son. They worked out at our club. And then he also did the DEP workout twice a week. Just do lots of running and push ups. If you do an internet search, you can find the requirements for passing the physical fitness test at boot camp. Then you will know exactly what you have to prepare for.

The run time seems to be an issue with some recruits, but my son isn't a runner and he did ok on it. I guess for female recruits, many have issues with pushups.

My son had a personal trainer (the guy gave him a discount because he was going in the military). Greg took him a list of what was going to be expected of him when he got to boot camp and they worked on that twice a week, then Greg did stuff on his own as well.

That sounds great. . . the Recreation Center in town here has personal trainers. I will have to look into how much they cost and weather or not they have some sort of military discount. I think I trainer whould help me a lot because when I work out alone I have zero motivation.

Hi Nicole,
My son joined the local YMCA and then after he'd been working out for about 3-4 weeks he hired a personal trainer and he swam in the pool (it was a lap pool) so that he would be ready as a rescue swimmer. He said it helped him ALOT to be ready. Other people were throwing up and he said even though he was exhausted sometimes, he did a lot better than most. He trained all summer. Mind you when he left he had almost no body fat and even less after boot. Good luck to you. I hope you make it through with flying colors! :) Donna

Hi Nicole, My guys just studied out of the Dep book, general orders, chain of command etc. As far as training they ran 1 to 2 miles everyday. Weight training and push-ups. They had the most problems with the push-up so they broke it down. Do 30 as fast as you can. Then build up 5 at a time. until you get your 50. If your not a swimmer them you should spend some time in the pool. When do you leave? My son John (my 3rd in) will leave for BC on 3/11. Good Luck.

I leave for BC October 7th so I have plenty of time to get in shape. There is a possibility of me shipping earlier than October though if I meet my physical requirments. But I don't know if I really want to leave early.

I agree with Nate's mom there is no right or wrong time. The only good time is when you decide. Truth is are you ready to face the challenges or not. Do not be afraid you will be just fine. Remember God is with you all the time, he will let you know if the time is right or not. GOOD LUCK in the choice you make. My prayers are with you. I Thank you for joining the military and protecting our country. God Bless and take care in your decision.

My son was stubborn. I could get him to do the memorization part, but the exercise, no way. I guess he felt he got enough exercise in High School. Needless to say, he did fine and graduated from boot camp on time. My advice to you would be, running, swimming, sit ups and push ups a few times a week.

Hi Nicole,
My son was a couch potato and did ok on all the PT except the swimming. He never could stand to get his face wet so came close to having his grad from BC delayed. Make sure you can float in a prone position for 5 min. As far as earlier BC just remember it's COLD at Great Lakes with lots of snow so if that's not your thing, starting earlier means you get out before the winter weather starts. You sound like you're very motivated so you should have no problems. Best of luck to you and thank you in advance for your service!
