my son is supposed to graduate the 16th - i just got a call from him that he didnt pass the run. he is so upset and crying. he said he is pretty sure he gets to try again, but doesnt know when and thinks he wont have a chance to know or call til next thursday and ill already be on a plane then :-( i dont know wht to do - i tried calling his recruiter and he hasnt heard anything and wasnt sure what to do. does anyone have experience with this??? i feel so bad for him, and im also scared to death that i will fly there and not get to see him, or have a chance to change my tickets if thats even possible! :(

How close was he to passing the run? If he was within 60-90 seconds, he can do it! Tell him to relax, do a few less situps and pushups, and try to start the run at a little easier pace.

I have seen so many guys push themselves on the situps and pushups (it's a macho thing :). They need to achieve a certain standard. After that, it's just bragging rights. Now, he shouldn't just stop as soon as he hits the minimum amount. He should try to do another 10 or so beyond the minimum. But, if his run is borderline, doing too many excess pushups and situps will really tire him out.

I have also seen too many people start the run as though they were sprinting to score a touchdown! The first 3 minutes, your son should focus on running at a pace that he could sustain for 2-3 miles. Once he gets warmed up, and feeling strong, he can push it for 30-60 seconds (but no sprinting - just pick up the pace slightly). If that works, he should continue that pace. If it doesn't, he should return to his prior pace, and every 1.5-2 minutes pick up the pace again for 30-60 seconds.

Your son must visualize running a good run (slightly slower start, picking it up and maintaining an even pace, and then finishing strong). If your son is beyond 90 seconds from the minimum time for the run, he will need remedial assistance, but this should not be the end of his naval career. He just needs to demonstrate his commitment and show that he can improve!

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Thanks for posting these tips. I am going to pass them along to my son. He was scheduled for PIR 10/16 but missed his run by 16 seconds. He is now in FIT and should take the run again Monday.

Kari - This happened to a a couple of the people from our PIR group. They get several chances to try again between now and PIR. Once he makes his run time he can participate in battlestations even if his division has already went thru, they'll just put him in with someone elses group. Once he passes b.s. you will get a call from him that he has passed. If that call doesn't come, it is possible he didn't make it. In that case they let one of our pir guys sit in the bleachers during PIR. It's sad when that happens, but his mom came with a smile on her face. Got to spend a short amount of time with him and was able to lift his spirits. Now he is finishing up A school and is doing well.

Hopefully he wasn't too far off. Remember, the being upset is normal when they've had a let down. It's difficult to function without getting out of sorts when you are disappointed in yourself, stressed and sleep deprived. He'll be get thru this. Say a prayer.

Thank you both so much..... Im starting to feel a little better about it all......... Brad was only 15 seconds shy of passing, so I know he can do it :) i wish i could talk to him again to give him some of those words of wisdom and encourage him more, but thoughts will have to due for now......... i know i told him taht he could do it, and that itd be ok and i love him, but i was also concerned about the facts and in shock and had maybe 5 min total that i really wish i would have done a better job of just encouraging him. :(

Kari, my son had a hard time passing his run also, made in on the very last try by 9 seconds, just keep on, practice makes perfect. Best of luck to your SR.

The Navy wants the recruits to succeed so they'll do everything they can to get him through. His buddies will help too I'm sure. They're such a team by now, if one fails they all feel obligated to help him pass.

Don't worry - the Navy trains creates 1000 Sailors a week. He's been through 95% of boot camp - they'll get him through.

I agree with the Navy wants him to make it. Its disheartening when they are disappointed but what a lift when they tackle the obstacle and come out a winner!!! Saying a prayer for him. 15 seconds faster he can do!!!

It took my granddaughter a couple tries to get through the running. She did graduate on time. My prayers are with your son. If you do talk to him again, ask him to get a buddy to pace him a couple times. That really helped my granddaughter.

Keep up the prayers for your son - HE WILL PASS, have faith and believe. Keep encouraging him - they will give him chances. 15 seconds?? He can do it, and the instructors will help him. They don't give up and are awesome at helping the recruits. Sounds like he has what it takes, I feel good about this Mom. It will all work out!!
