Navy For Moms

Seems like it was forever ago he started the DEP program, but on November 3rd, my son Mike is due to go to bootcamp in Michigan. Reality's hitting and I'm a wreck. He seems ok, trying to stay focused and running a lot, getting ready, excited about his going away party which will be this Saturday, Oct. 24th. Just wondering if anyone else has a child leaving this time. Sure could use the company

Hi Pat.
My son is also leaving for bootcamp on Nov. 3rd. He will be going to Great Lakes, Ill. for his basic training. I'm with you....I am starting to get a little freaked out. I am so proud of him and he is so excited and scared and I think dreading saying goodbye. His last day of work was last Thursday and it's really sinking in now. I am planning a party for him this weekend as well but he seems a little nervous about that. I told him we wouldn't call it a "going away" party, but just a get together. Silly, huh? He has a younger brother who is also starting to get pretty ansy about him leaving as well, his big brother is his "best friend" so it's going to really be hard on him, too. What part of the country are you in? We are in Texas.

Hi, We're in New Jersey. Good Luck with your party this weekend. We had ours last weekend and it was a great diversion for both of us I think. It seems like when the preparations were over and the family and friends went home reality really hit. Mikes done with work now too. He's been so upbeat all along but the past couple days really quiet and serious looking. Kind of breaks my heart a bit. But I'm sure everyone leaving for bootcamp must have a lot of emotions going on. Saying goodbye is never easy. It sure isn't for me. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Give my regards to your son and please keep in touch. Let me know how your party goes. We can cry on eachothers shoulders next week!

Stay strong Pat. The 2 months will be tough on both but he will be so glad he chose to get into a great career field and become a man. He won't loose his sense of humor, sloppy room syndrome :) or anything else. Believe me, I worried Jenna would become a zombie who saluted me, but not the case. She still messed up her room on leave and took 5 hour naps. She sure does appreciate me more now..

Hi My daughter also leaves for Great Lakes on that day.....all so far is really good with all of us, we are staying busy and thinking about positive things that will happen in her life, we do know alot of friends that have been in even though it has been many years they all have about the same stories to tell..DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING PERSONAL those 3 months. I am just not sure we will make it there for graduation since it will be approx -20 or more there when they graduate, that wold be hard to miss.
Hope to hear info soon after she leaves but know that sometimes it's weeks and weeks before there is any letter or call, stay strong.

Thanks Teri for the tips. The Navy is new to me! I take it by no personal items a cell phone wouldn't be a good thing to take. Was hoping he could. I'm really happy to hear that you are all doing well. I guess thinking about all the positive aspects is the way to go. I am so proud of his decision to go and think it will be a wonderful experience for him but still feeling the pangs of sadness. I know we'll all be fine and I'm staying as strong as I can in the moment. Don't know much about graduation yet but I'm planning on being there. Hope it works out. My best to you, your daughter and your family. And I hope we hear from them soon after too. A Mom can hope, right!!! Pat

yes shelly I did, it was a relief but made the tears flow again! Did Dylan bring his cell phone? Mike called me from the airport and when the plane landed, and then the 30 second call. I wish they would let them keep them there but I think they'll send it back

Hi Pat,
I am happy to hear that you got the call. I know what you mean, it makes you feel better but it gets all the emotions going again just hearing their voice. Yes Dylan did take his phone and because he just saw us at MEPS he called his sister in Ohio at the airport. So now we are just waiting here for him to give us the 30 second call tonight sometime when he gets there. I am not putting the tissues far out of my reach!!
Please let me know when you receive your packet with Mike's graduation date and I will let you know when I get Dylan's. I really hope they are on the same day!!
