Is there a webpage somewhere that shows all the different classes of ships with a listing of their sizes?

I've been looking all over and while I can find sites that discuss the different classes, I can find nothing that compares them by length and tonnage. Trying to envision the various ships and which class my son may be assigned to. TIA.

I know you can find the Classification at this link

http://www.militaryfactory.com/ships/us-navy-ship-classifications.asp

or

http://www.nvr.navy.mil/class.htm

And from there you can get the ships in each.

.wikipedia has a List of naval ship classes in service other then that I got nothing…lol

Didn’t have to learn that stuff

Thanks Denise, but that first site just listed the various classes and the second site threw all sorts of garbage onto my computer. Still looking.

ok, typed in the second site and that was loaded with the info I was looking for. Thank you.

Here is a list of groups on N4M associated with ships.

The site for Naval Vessel Registry is also on this discussion - it's one of the "featured" discussion in case you loose this thread.

Thanks Bunker.

I was trying to do some research by ship class, not name of ship, but I see I can find some info with a bit of effort. Just in talking to my son this weekend, he mentioned what type of ship he is listing for his dream sheet, and I wanted to see how much I could learn about it in advance.

Out of curiousity, you may know the answer, is the distance the ship will travel correlated to its' size? In other words, will he see more of the world by getting aboard a larger ship?

Well the DDG and FRG are smaller ships and they sometimes are part of a strike group with a carrier, and they get to many if not more ports than the carrier cause they can pull into more. Some FRG are out patroling the coasts of Africa on pirate patrol, not part of a strike group. Just a tiny bit of info. What type of ship does your son want to be on?  The carriers go to many ports, my sailor is on her 2nd deployment and has been to Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Bahrain, Greece, Dubai. She really has seen a lot.

No not necessarily. Submarines can go anywhere - they are not that big by comparison - fast attacks are 300+ feet. Some do not want to be on anything except a "carrier" or a destroyer (more fire power). My son (a nuke officer) was more interested subs because he had more management opportunities and he was able to experience a variety of jobs.  There are only 10 junior officer on a sub - on a carrier hundreds. Does he want to see the Mediterranean or does he want to go visit Guam/Japan?

Denise - I'm impressed that they still have AGER listed in the http://www.nvr.navy.mil/class.htm

It still ticks me off that the President didn't allow us to capture our ship back again when we had the chance.

Didnt think to check here for the info...DUH Denise!!!

Again I just am not all up on ships since I have a Seabee. I know he has been to a lot of place. But compared to sailors on ship I don't know. I think he has had to spend more time in those places

2 years Iceland

6 months Iraq

stuff like that

Originally all he wanted was to be on a Destroyer, but now he thinks an Amphibious Assault ship would be more to his liking. I was surprised to read how big those things are. In my mind, I equate size with less motion sickness. Not sure if that's a reality.

If it were me, I'd choose a carrier, but he thinks they're way too big and too many people.

I think he's hoping for the Pacific.

Once he goes gator freighter, that's what he gets from there on out for sea duty.  Hubby was on amphibs, enjoyed it a lot.   The new ones are very sharp.

When its all said and done I believe that he will get what the Navy wants him to have. Hopefully he will enjoy it
