Travel After Boot Camp?

Don't worry, the Navy will take care of getting you to wherever you need to go. They'll get you to the airport, issue you a ticket along with your orders and you'll get on the plane. My son travelled with quite a few others down to Pensacola. When you get there, you go to the USO at the airport and they'll tell you how to get to the base. There's a shuttle bus but if you arrive too late in the day you may have to take a taxi. If so, the USO will call one for you and if several of you share the cab it'll split the cost. This is what happened to my son over a year ago so things may have changed....anyone have any new info?

Every situation may be different when it comes to A school. My son left GL the same day he graduated. The bus took him from RTC to O'Hare and he flew to San Diego on a commercial flight. Once he got to San Diego he called the duty driver at the base to come pick him up. Once he was on base he reported to the Quarterdeck with his orders. This is only one of a million different ways you can end up in A school. I think what you need to hear right now is that the Navy will take care of you and you may be 'on your own' at the airport (depending on where your A school is) but you will have orders and a ticket and the USO to hang out at.

You don't always go 'straight' to A school after boot camp. There is thing called 'on hold'. You may have to wait at GL or A school before classes actually begin. Ask your recruiter what 'on hold' means.

As Melissa said, getting from boot camp to A school depends on different factors such as how many are going to the same place/same time as you, and how big is your A school command.

When I went to A school I was given a ticket and put in a bus with all the other recruits who graduated the week I did. They dropped us off at the airport with a ticket and our orders. The USO office at the airport helped guide us from there.

Most of the girls from my company and our sister company (now known as divisions) were all going to two or three schools in huge groups of 30 or more. I was the only one going to my school, HT A school, which was located in Philadelphia at the time. I was instructed to take a taxi from the airport to the base.

I had never taken a taxi before so I was nervous and kind-of excited.

Once I reached the gates I was dropped off and checked in with the guards. From there I had to walk. My school was really tiny and was the only school on base, they didn't even have a car or bus to offer. I was given a map and basic directions. It was about 6 blocks away, not a bad walk.

Once I arrived I checked in at the quarterdeck (front office) gave them the receipt from my taxi ride. I was reimbursed for the cab ride a few weeks later.
