My son just PIR'd on Friday (1/23/09) and didn't have his orders for A school. He was sent to ship 17 to wait for orders...anyone else in this situation? I've heard that some are there for 4 months waiting. Help!

I don't know... he PIR'd and is being sent to A school in Pcola but is waiting for his orders to go through. We dropped him back to base both Friday and Saturday nights to ship 17. Said that there are many others there that are waiting for orders too. Are there different parts of ship 17?

thu is just that, temp. holding for sailors waiting on orders or other paper work to go through. They will work during the day, take watches and then be able to do other things, such as leave base or hang out.
The seperation unit in ship 17 is different, that is for those who are waiting to leave the Navy. Because they are recruits and not sailors, unfortunatly they are not given as many (if any) liberties, and are treated differently.
I have know 2 sailors (personally) that have had to be in thu waiting on paperwork. I think one took 2 weeks, and the sailor that graduated with my son was there for 3 months. Aside from no cell phones or electronics, they were allowed to go to the nex, or off base, they were not restricted to one area, they had a tv area and could have stuff in their room. The Navy's "hurry up and wait" .

Jill,
My son is on hold as well waiting to go to Pensecola. He too started out on ship 17. Is your sailor on hold waiting for orders, or is he on hold waiting for a medical waiver? Either way, they start out on ship 17, however it is a different side. I too was worried when I heard my son was at Ship 17. They are actually at the THU area of Ship 17. Once he phases up he will move to the Pearl which is another ship for THU, that is where they go once they reach Phase 2. Once your sailor reaches Phase 3, he will go to the NSTS acrross the street, which is where the Sailors are, that are in A-school. My son had been on hold for 72 days. There is a huge number of sailors wating to class up in Pensacola, and believe they are keeping them in Great Lakes simply because they have no place else to put them. I have been told there is an instructor shortage in Pensacola, and that is why it is taking so long. YOur sailor can call everyday from a pay phone, and once he reaches phase 2 he can have a cell phone. I hope this helps you some.

Okay, So can you help me understand? They are holding on to the Sailors that have been through PIR because there is an instructor shortage (possibly). Does anyone have any update on this. Do you think this is what we can expect when Jacob graduates in just 6 weeks?

Blessings,
Renee
