What happens if sailor fails nuke program studies?

Hi, My nephew is concerned he will be kicked out of the Navy if he fails to keep up his grades in the Nuclear Power Program. He's currently last in his class in SC. Does anyone know what happens if he fails? I suggested he speak to his commanding officer to seek a tutor before he falls to far behind. He's a nice kid and is trying very hard to stay on course.

Toni, your nephew will not be kicked out of the Navy, but if he doesn't keep his grades up at Nuke School he will be kicked out of the Nuke Program and sent to the fleet as undesignated. What he needs to do is speak to his Class Petty Officer and tell him that he needs assistance, although they probably already know this, but if he shows initiative and asks for the help that will tell them that he is serious. The Nuke Program is difficult, but it is something that he can get through and there is nothing wrong with him asking for help.

Chaplin!! So nice to see you here again !! I have so missed you. How is the new duty station ? I am sure it is much diffrent than the NUKES that you were with for so long in Goose Creek.

Nukes who are not doing well are put on mandatory study. He can ask to do that if he feels he needs it. Depending on where he is in the pipeline will determine if he is sent out undesignated or not. If he has made it through one of the three nuke A schools, ET/EM/MM, he would go to the fleet as that rate.

Can someone explain to me the ET/ET/MM; my son says he is an EM3 at paygrade e4????? It's all greek to me, and he just sighs everytime I ask him questions about it. Typical teen, thinks mom is coo coo...... Ha Ha

He's at Goose Creek right now, coming home on leave on 7/17 for 10 days (maybe 15 if he's a recruiter's helper???)
Then I don't know where he goes, he's not real open about what's going on, except to tell me he loves it and is near the top of his class :o)

They don't want anyone to fail. If he asks for help it is there. He can go and talk to his fellow classmates as well. Get in with a study group. This is a tough program. My son had somewhat of an idea because his father and uncle had gone through the program but he still wanted to do it. He would call frustrated and worried before every test. His dad would talk to him and that would help. He is know a Nuke Electricain on a sub- just like his dad and uncle. He looks back now and realizes it was really hard but glad he went through it. Keep encouraging him. He has to believe in himself as well. So much of it is mental. It is a lot to cram into your head in a short amount of time.
If for some reason he doesn't finish and be a nuke he can still be in the Navy he will just do a different job. Someone saw something in him to let them believe he could do this or they wouldn't have let him go Nuke. Keep it positive. He can do this!!!!! I for one will be rooting for him.

Denise, Thanks for the words of encouragement. This kid has had a tough life at home with no support from his parents. My sister and I hope and pray he will stick with the program and yes we keep rooting for him. Toni

Hi, I agree with much said and would like to add one thing. If your nephew is feeling like he isn't going pass, which I will pray for him that if it is his to have, he will. However, always give him some game plan ideas so he does not get reassigned as "undesignated", that child will be chipping paint. Have him be ready for A schools to attend he also has an interest and aptitude for. It's important that he doesn't just chip paint with a Nukes brain, just not right!
PS, I love all you paint chippers out there too, thank you for what you do for our country.
My sun was on Subs for 8 years and is teaching overseas now, we are proud of all our military!

ok, advise here but it may be too late. My son graduated first part of Nuke this past Dec. He was supposed to finish the 2nd hands on part by next month (June) but ended up failing the 2nd test. They gave him a retest as all his teachers and other people he mentioned (I don't know who they are) pulled for him as they saw he was working hard and doing a lot of overtime. When they retested him, they didn't tell him till they collected the test, that he was only to do the questions he didnt finish and to do the ones he got wrong and he wasted time redoing the whole test. So, from a 2.4 to a 2.46 he still didn't make it and now is painting and said they will have him do general maintenance. He is in Goose Creek. He is 25 going on 26 years old with a BS degree in Applied Science and Technology from Rochester Institute Tech. in NY. His first 4 years were in physics and the last year he took the last course (which his degree is in) as physics got more difficult. So what do you guess will happen now? He wanted so bad to get into the Nuke program and to get on a sub as as electrician. This came about almost 2 weeks ago. He is out of the nuke program now. Would appreciate any info, even if it isn't much, Thanks!!!! Dee

Tori - My son was a Nuke, but did not pass one of his classes. He did everything he could - mandatory study, extra tutoring, etc. Because he kept such a good attitude and really, really tried his best, he was allowed to re-classify and is now in another A school. He's doing great and really loves it. My son just wasn't cut out to be a Nuke.

Toni first, GooseCreek is the top school of the Nuke Program. The other three school take their classes from Goose Creek. If your nephew was choosen to go to Goose Creek than he is a very bright young man. He needs to ask for help with his studies. They seen something in him or they would not have sent him to Goose Creek. My son went to Goose Creek and said it is very hard and they do cram alot at you. Tell him we are all behind him and wish him well. If my son could do it than I know your nephew can too.
