Just FYI...my brother was ATI and from what he explained they both can be assigned to a squadron, and both take rotations on the carriers.

Another difference can be where they are assigned... ATO with a squadron (the planes) ATI with a ship that takes planes...

My son laughs at me but I remember them as ATI (works inside in a lab) and ATO (works outside on the plane)...

This is what I found on Wikipedia website:
There are currently two types of AT's:[2] Intermediate (I-level) and Organizational (O-level).These two levels do not affect their rate insignia or change how they are addressed (an AT3 is an AT3, regardless of I- or O-level). However, their duties are significantly different, and I-level and O-level ATs take different advancement exams, as if they were different rates. It provides more detail on the Wikipedia site.
Thanks Cindy for your input.

ATI work in a lab and ATO work on the aircraft. Both troubleshoot or fix Avionics equipment.

RoadrunningNavyMom----I recommend this web site www.cnic.navy.mil/Pensacola/index.htm. I found it last year when my daughter was sent to Pensacola for her a school. She then continued on to c school at Keesler AFB, in Biloxi, Ms. She is a calibration tech. & she has been in Yokosuka, Japan for about a month. When the USS GW returns to its homeport she will be serving on that carrier.
When you go to that web site, you can access the Navy Student Handbook, which I found helpful. click on 'relocation'.....click on 'bachelor housing'....click on NATTC "A" school.....click on NATTC Navy Student Handbook. Good info about phases 1 thru 3. I hope this helps you.

RoadrunningNavyMom, If you google in Aviation Electronics Technician (US Navy) on wikipedia you'll find the explanation of his job & rating. My son is an ATO graduating this week. When your son arrives in Pensacola he will have to go through INDOC, ATT & AWAT first before he begins his A school classes. It was about 3 to 4 weeks before my son began his classes. In the meantime your son will be kept busy. Once he does begin A school the classes usually run about 6 weeks. It's a really nice base I'm sure he'll like it.
