Hey all - are any of you in this group relatives of MSRON 2 Sailors? Glen

I doubt that this is OPSEC since I got it off of Navy.mil
But I bet this is the group that my son replaced.

Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 3 Returns
Story Number: NNS091023-17
Release Date: 10/23/2009 2:03:00 PM

By Lt. Kate Raia, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command West Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Over 500 active and reserve Sailors assigned to Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) 3 returned to Naval Air Station North Island, Oct. 21 following a seven-month deployment to the 5th Fleet area of operations.

MSRON 3 is comprised of Boat Division 34, Boat Detachments 341 and 342, Security Detachments (SecDet) 321, and 541, San Diego; Security Detachment 541 Forth Worth, Texas; Boat Detachment 922, Evert, Wa., and Security Detachment 321. Sailors from other selected reserve units, including Boat Detachment 343; Seal Beach, Calif., and Security Detachment 331; San Antonio, Texas augmented MSRON 3 and Security Detachment 321, based in Rota, Spain.

The squadron provided seaward surveillance and security forces in amphibious areas and harbors, and military significant coastal and inshore areas.

This was the maiden deployment for MSRON 3 and they were successful in every sense. The squadron conducted 400 boat escort missions, 180,000 people and 35,000 vehicles were vetted and there were zero attacks upon them. SecDet 321 conducted missions in 20 different countries.

"They topped the bar with what MESF (Maritime Expeditionary Security Forces) forces are supposed to do," said MSRON 3 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Stanfield Chien.

The squadron continued the mission of providing harbor defense and port security to seaward approaches and waterways to include manning Iraqi oil platforms, and providing force protection and escort services to designated assets transiting chokepoints and in ports.

This deployment gave Sailors numerous opportunities and the Sailors definitely took advantage. Over 200 personnel received their expeditionary warfare qualification and twenty-two personnel were advanced to chief petty officer.

"Sailors got to show what they could do based on merit and not just rank," said Cmdr. Chien.

Sailors were also given the chance to experience the different cultures and conducted numerous hours of community relations projects in the various countries they visited.

MSRON 3 is part of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, a global force provider of adaptive force packages of expeditionary capabilities to joint warfighting commanders.

haha - mine called several times and asked if groceries he left overnight in his truck (eggs, cheese, etc). were still good - this is in Virginia.

MSRON Det 4 left today - I think. I have not heard from my son yet.

I have to laugh. Our son called my wife the other day and asked if the potatoe salad we gave him 2 weeks ago was still ok to eat. It's been sitting in his fridge. You can put a uniform on them but they are still the same kids sometimes.

Isn't it great that you can seen him fairly frequently. We're in Richmond and we saw Jenn almost every weekend. They are just far enough away to get used to being on their own and just close enough that if they start getting homesick, they can come home. It was like having the best of two worlds.

Used to be in 6 - Det 27 -- my guess is that there's no one left there now that would remember her.

Danny is coming home for the weekend and is bringing 2 other Sailors with him. We've restocked the steaks and beer and I'm going to have to stake out my claim on the remote control for some college football tomorrow. :) We're so glad we're close enough for him to come home and that we get to meet some other Sailors and open up our home to them. It makes me feel good....like buying a meal for a traveling Sailor, Marine or soldier in the airport. It's just the right thing to do!

When my daughter was in Portsmouth (3years), she had an apartment in Churchland for 1 year and then moved to VA Beach for the rest. Portsmouth itself isn't much. We live in VA and visited her often so I know my way around that area pretty well. To get someplace fairly nice -- you need to live NOT in Portsmouth.

Glen and Vivian, My son is also in Portsmouth and has been in the Virginia Beach/Portsmouth area since he PIR'd - February of 2008. He went to Master at Arms A school in Virginia Beach, then his first duty station was Portsmouth. He has done some training in Gulfport, Mississippi for a few weeks - He went to the oil platforms off of Kuwait in the Persian Gulf last summer - another special training somewhere in the area for a few weeks. He absolutely hates Portsmouth (the city). He says that it is like a ghetto city. The Portsmouth base does not have a galley, so when he had a room on base - he had to cook for himself. I enjoyed that because we spent lots of time on the phone while he shopped and then cooked. Then, he moved into a house with a married couple and some other guys. Now, they have given up the house and I think he is camping out on someones couch while waiting for his time to go to Spain.
He does travel around a lot. Last weekend he went all the way up to Maryland. He goes to Massachusetts a lot also. He loves Philadelphia.

Brenda Sue - our son Dan is in MSRON 2, BOATDET 21. He's a Gunners Mate, just arrived in Portsmouth less than 2 weeks ago. He likes it a lot. Doing PT, getting oriented, lots of classroom training. We'd be interested in hearing what the rest of you hear from your Sailors. How many of your Sailors are in East Coast MSRON units? Glen
