Navy For Moms

My Boyfriend is going to be in Aircrew A school after bootcamp, he has been in for a week now and still no letter from him. Since I can't write him yet, I have not been able to ask about His A School and how that will work out seeing how we are not married. So any help on what he will be going though and how long or even if you have any idea when he can get his first leave would be great help. Still very new to Navy life and want to know what we can and can not do. If it helps at all he will be moved up after bootcamp because he is an eagle scout I think anyways, I really have no idea and would love to learn more about what it will be like and what would be the best way for us to get married in the next year or two. Also How long bootcamp is would help a lot, I have been told anywhere from six weeks to 12 weeks, is that right?Thank you so much for your help. Proud Navy Girlfriend

Hello!
I just read your question to my husband and this is what his response was (he is an airman..not aircrew):
For the first couple weeks, my husband said you will most likely not hear from him while in bootcamp. So don't be surprised if you don't get a letter for a little bit because they are so busy. Bootcamp for my husband was 8 weeks. But he heard they changed it to 10-11 weeks. During a school, he will be doing a lot of school work, home work and working out. If you guys are not married, he will have to live in the barracks and not off base. A school can vary in length depending on each airman. My husband was on hold for 6 months before he even started a school because of lack of instructors. His a school was 7 weeks long. But he said that aircrew is different. When he is in school, he can not go on leave. So if he wanted to go home, it would have to be before or after a school. My husband's a school was in Pensacola, FL, which if you ever get to visit the beach area is soooo awesome! If you guys plan on getting married, the best way in my opinion is to get married asap. But thats obviously if you plan on getting married already. The reason I say asap is because the military offers awesome benefits for spouses. And if you get married before he transfers to his permant duty station, then they will pay for the move. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask anything! Welcome to the Navy family! This past year has been the best year of my life. It's been an awesome ride! Good Luck!!!! :)

Well We can't get married till I am done with school this May, So thats a hold up I know but, I was hoping you could tell me if he could save up leave time?? We want to get married in AZ with our family and friends more than anything, We where planing oon this time next year hoping he will have a break from A school Holidays, He is also first in Pensacola, FL but he told me for 26 months if that helps any. Also I was thinking that he should have time after a school to get married before he has a duty station, will that happen I have no idea. I just want to get this planned as much as I can so he wouldnt have to worry about this and work harded on his a school. Thank you for your help I cant wait to be a real Navy Wife.

Yes they do save up leave time. They get 2 1/2 days a month of leave time. If he is in A school though he can't take any leave time. And out of every one that I know, I've never heard of A school for aircrew for 26 months, but I could be wrong. Once he is at Pensacola and starts A school, he won't get approved for leave unless it is a family emergency and a wedding is not considered an emergency. My brother in law couldn't go home for his own wedding when he married my sister until he was done with school. It sucks, but that's the military for ya! Any more questions? Ask away darlin!!! :)

Can I go see him in A school on weekends? my mom works for southwest so I get great deals on plane tickets and would love to see him more. also can they have cell phones once in A school? I really hate not talking to him for this long and I know his mom would feel better if she could talk to her Sammie more than letters.

Hi Jenny, what did your husband do for the 7 months he was on hold?

Reply to This

well at first, he had to scrub walls for 8 hours a day. after a few months, he had an opportunity to join the lawn crew which cleaned up garbage outside. he was excited because he got to be outside and not stuck inside all day. i personally think it's a waste of goverment dollars but who am i! haha :)

When our son went off to boot camp, we got one quick phone call from him to say he arrived OK, and that a box of his belongings would be arriving soon. Then it was a very long time before we got another call. But, we did get a letter from the Navy with his writing on the bottom giving us his mailing address. We didn't hear from him but I began writing him everyday. This was good for him , but extemely good for me. He finally called after many weeks to give us his PIR date. We went to Great Lakes to see his graduation. That will always be a very special memory for me. He went to A-school in P-Cola and another school in Camp Lejeune, NC. Now he is on the USS George Washington which is forward deployed in Japan. I wish you and your special sailor all the best. Personally, I can't wait for my son to either get out in 2 more years or if he stays in to at least get back to the US.

My son left In early Feb. and his graduation was April 18. My son was given extra duties in boot camp because he had some college. I feel that being an eagle scout will probably help him because he probably will exhibit leadership skills. I know it will help him far beyond BC. not because his is a eagle scout but because of the over all qualities that he will show.

Have a Great Life, Ginger

Yes, Jenny is right. No leave in A-School. My son got to come home for 3 days but it was because his grandfather died. I really played it up in speaking to the Red Cross because his Grandfather was a veteran. I also told them that he was the reason that my son decided to join the service. It was all true, but I wanted to make sure the Navy knew it.

Ok so no leave till out of boot camp got it, but when boot camp is over do they have a week off like the army or do they right into A school? And a 26 months that he told me I think he really has no idea and made up the number not to worry his mom and I,So all I know that Pensacola is first than Cali than Maine. but in A school I was told that they get leave for holidays is that true? because if it is we could try for a wedding next year and thats what we were kinda thinking any ways. Also I know the Navy will let us live together once we are married, but what Am I to do for a job, I mean I want to go with him when I can but I want to have some money we can save up for after Navy life. Any ideas on that? Oh also when will I know graduation date? you said they could keep him longer so when will i know so I can get tickets to go up there, I want that more then anything. Thank you Guys for all your help I am not as worried any more so one is answering my questions!!

Thank you very much

Um, I know that when my hubs was done with bootcamp, they gave him 2 days at great lakes to be offbase but they couldn't go 50 miles away from the base. After the 2 days, he got sent to Pcola. I'm sure what your boyfriend is telling you is right about the 26 months, I just have never heard it for A school for Aircrew, but it could very well be possible. My hubsands ex is in the navy as well and she has 28 months of school but it's not for Aircrew. I'm not sure about leave for the holidays. My husband got leave approved but he was on hold and didn't start school yet. So I don't know how holidays work if your in school. He already knows where he's going after bootcamp? He's so lucky! My husband didn't find out where he was going to be duty station until a week before he graduated A school. After he graduated A school in Pcola, he flew to his hometown in Oregon, packed up his car and drove across country the next day to me in my hometown of Chicago. We got married and he stayed with me on leave for a little over a week and then he drove the rest to Virginia. I moved out here about a month later after he found us an apartment. I don't have a job yet because we both agreed that because he works a lot that if I worked we wouldn't have a lot of time to spend with each other. And as newlyweds, we still want to be around each other as much as possible. HAHA. Once he goes on deployment, then I will get a job to pass the time. Some schools out here offer discounts for military spouses. And you could always get a job working on base as well. Once you guys get married and decide to move out with him, then the military gives you housing allowance and food allowance to pay for rent, most of your utilities (depending on how much they are) and food. But I would definetly suggest that while you guys are away from each other, you do whatever you can to save up money. The money I saved help out sooooo much. I had to pay for my move which cost almost 2,000 after everything was said and done. And we had to get everything for a new place, so it was nice to have an extra cush! :) Also, you will learn that the military takes FOREVER for paperwork to go through. It tooks us 3 months for our housing allowance to kick in. So if we didn't have that money that I saved up before I moved, we would have been in trouble! About the graduation date, he will get a phone call around half way through bootcamp or later to tell you when his graduation date is. He has to put you on a list for graduation or they wont let you come to it. I can't really help you with hotels or anything like that because I lived about 45 minutes away from Great Lakes so I just drove up there. But, if you need cheap airfare, you can get emailed awesome specials from Travelzoo.com. They email a top 20 deals of the week email once a week and they usually have some pretty awesome airfare deals. I also signed up for emails from Orbitz, Priceline, Expedia and a bunch of individual airlines. From my personal experience, it saved me a lot of money when I flew to Pcola 4 times, North Carolina (to see my sissy), Oregon and Virginia.
Hopefully my rambling helped a little bit. LOL. Good Luck Darlin! :)
