Wow Cathy, reading your comment below made me soooo weepy, I know exactly how you feel. I worry about Joey the same way you do and the rest of the ladies. I too am soooo glad that we have each other on this site.

Thanksgiving will be hard, but Christmas without my son...I get teary just thinking about it. To overcome that feeling today, I used retail therapy. Bought a Santa hat, a stocking, a teeny tree and decorations, and lots of non meltable treats like Starbursts to fill the stocking. After I return from a trip I am taking over Thanksgiving, I will be baking some favorite cookies and fudge. At least picking out snacks that I know my son loves made me feel better while I was doing it. Geesh, he is only across the country right now. Who knows where they will be this time next year. Yikes, lots to get used to! Glad we have each other!

The holidays are just bringing out the mom in us, wanting our kids to be home with family, wanting them to be happy, and well fed! Derek said he does not have Thanksgiving off, he plans to go to Subway. He may just be saying that so I won't worry about him being alone! Dawn, seems there should be some way your daughter and get off to attend a wedding! Poor thing!

I think my daughter said something about them being done with their 2 week stint on the ship on Wednesday. Or perhaps she meant they had Thursday free. Not sure.
We are still hoping she will get leave at Christmas so she can be home for her big sister's wedding. She's a brides maid! But it doesn't look promising. Will be soo sad, as they are very close.

I live in Greensboro Wendy. My son is an AO. He is completing indoc, I think he said next week, and will return to his division. He really loves it in Washington, he says it's beautiful, and he would like to live there permanently. I hope Michael will be able to spend Thanksgiving with his girlfriend too. What happens if they stay on the ship does the galley provide a Thanksgiving meal for the sailors? Sorry to ask, maybe that is an abvious answer. Can you tell I am new to all this?! LOL

Hi Cathy, Where are you in NC? I lived in Raleigh for a very brief time about 3 years ago. I love it there.
Is your son a nuke? Michael did so well all through nuclear power school and prototype. I'm hoping that it's just the adjustment of having to live on the ship, since he's used to having his own apartment. He did say that his girlfriend drove down from Everett last night to see him and have dinner with him, which I was so glad to hear. It's just so hard being a mom when your child is an entire country away and not happy and there's nothing I can do about it. Well, I'm glad your son will be able to have a nice Thanksgiving. Michael told me last night that the Reactor Officer wanted to make them spend Thanksgiving on the ship, but that the Commanding Officer said no. I hope he'll be able to go home and have Thanksgiving with his girlfriend.

Hi Wendy, I am having separation anxiety but not for the same reason. I live in NC so I am across the country just like you. My son reported the week after yours did, and has been living on the barge. I have been a single mom for 11 years and my son and daughter and I are so extremely close. I am having trouble coping with him not being with us for Thanksgiving and Christmas. He probably feels like I am going oveboard with questions about how he will spend his day on Thanksgiving. He said one of his supervisors invited him and a couple others from his division over to his house for the day. So I feel alot better, and thank you to whomever is opening their home to my son and the other sailors. Hopefully in time I will get better at this!

Hi Everyone,
My son is a nuke stationed on the Abe Lincoln. He reported on Oct. 7, after he finished nuke prototype in New York. He has an apt.in Everett and has been commuting to the ship in Bremerton via the bus/ferry - a 2 hour commute! Just this past week, they decided that the nukes in the reactor division have to live on the ship. I don't think I've ever heard my son sound so depresssed! It's killing me. I live in Florida and just feel like I want to fly out there and hug him and make it all better. Is anyone else going through this with your sailors? Thanks.

Hi all.
So I have to share that my daughter broke her engagement a few weeks back, which greatly relieves me. She hadn't known him very long, and she just turned 20 earlier this month. Plenty of time for marriage later.
On the other hand, she is now dating someone she's known for a couple years and has always been interested in, but didn't think he was interested in her. Guess again! We'll see where this one leads.

She missed muster for the first time today. Hasn't been getting more than 4 hours sleep for a while, since they're livng on the Lincoln right now. And she's now sick. So... slept through muster. I have no idea what the ramifications of that will be. But at least she got more than 4 hours sleep!
