IF MY SR ALREADY RECEIVED HIS ORDERS AND HE IS STARTING A SCHOOL AT GL, WILL HE STILL GET LEAVE AFTER SCHOOL? OR WILL HE REPORT IMMEDIATELY?  HE WILL BE AT A SCHOOL FOR 26 DAYS

More than likely he will go from PIR to school.  For me son it took a week or so before he started his school. There was no leave for my son until Christmas break and he was in school at that time and they wanted those who had leave to take it if possible.. Then his next leave came before going to C school in Virginia.  Things could have changed by now and also it may depend on where he is to report to.  The Navy is ever changing.

Thanks for the info Connie-he has 26 days at gl he is undes and i wasnt sure if they offered leave or not. His orders are for the USS Vandergrift and she is currently deployed in the pacific. I heard they automatically get leave after deployment. I guess i'll know more when i see him for PIR

Undes get their orders very early as their added on training is very short.  In his orders it states how much leave he can take, normally 2 weeks, BUT it is up to him if he wants to take that leave or not.

Also when he takes leave HE will have to pay to get home, the USN only pays for him to get from his school to his duty station.  Even if the ship is deployed, depending how long it is deployed, they may fly him to the ship.

Thanks for the info it is very helpful! I know i'll know more after PIR, but this clears things up
Hello thank you for explaining time off after school.. Regarding the paying to get home .. Are there people to help with that ?.. Tickets etc .. Since he's never made travel arrangements and won't have personal Internet access . And how does it work he buys round trip to hone then back to base at own expense ? Sorry I'm new at Navy ways and he's obviously going to be new at it all too.. Also typing disclaimer can't type well and on small phone screen to boot sorry :)

Yes there are people that will help him plan that....BUT he will have personal internet access once he is on the "A" School base.

What happens is:  example:

If he is in school in Great Lakes and his next duty station is in San Diego CA, but home is in New York...The Navy will ONLY pay to get him from Great Lakes to San Diego...so he goes to SATO (the people who will help him with a ticket....they will set up the flight from Great Lakes to New York and than New York to San Diego...and the Sailor will pay the difference of what it would have cost to get from Great Lakes to San Diego.

Hope that make sense...Also he has to pay for it right than and there.

Hiya Angie..thanks for your response..now since he has to pay right then there..can he use his credit card?..he has an amex or discover with high enough limit..well i hope its high enough......OR only cash?..because if i need to bring him money during PIR i want to be prepared!..

i know he'll have his bootcamp pay but from what i understand that gets a lot taken out and i dont know how much plane will be...plus i assume he has to take a taxi to airport from base?..or do they offer shuttle?

and finally [i think;]..does he know he has to go to this SATO place..i picture him saying to himself i want to go home after GL A school but i dont know what to do ...but thats me the worry wart mom..he has no exp in making flights etc so im glad you have that dept ..but getting him there is my issue

thank you VERY much for your expertise ..my mind is already crazy with missing him etc so any details that can assure me make me feel so much better

Credit card is fine to pay for the flight.

Regarding getting to the airport they offer a shuttle...he has to pay for it (think it is less than $20)

He will be told..over and over about going to SATO.  Also they make him fill out paperwork , and more paper work with his plans for after "A" School.

Just a side note...the people who help them with all this paper work...for the most part are all retired or Vets from the Navy.  And they do this process for 100's (if not more) Sailors a day....so they know the process to make sure they get leave after training.

He doesn't make his flight plans...that is what SATO is for...they do all that for him :~}

Concerning leave...my son was under the impression he would be in school through the middle of November.  I think his recruiter told him that.  HIS plan was to try and take his 2-week leave that the USN forwards them around Christmas.  His Uncle was Navy and his thoughts were that they may not let him take leave so soon after being stationed.  He wants Norfolk.  He is ET/FC.  His only option may be to do it right after A school.  Opinions???
