My Son is over in Bahrain and has been since March. I think the Skype is something like the Podcast that is when they talk over the internet and have a camera on both ends to see each other. I know they also have cell phones over at the NEX to buy and use. We talk at least 2-3 x' per week. I have found the best time for them to call and so the call will get connected is our late night and for them early morning. I am in Ohio so I am EST. I sure you know they are 7 1/2 hours ahead of us whereever you may live (time zone). Best of Luck and if you have any other questions or concerns please feel to contact me and I will help if I can. Hey, I'm not sure what Skype is, can anyone explain please. My son has been in Bahrain for about 8 weeks now and from his writing he is feeling a little down and I would love to know about how Skype works. Any other sailors from Ohio?

My son is in Bahrain on his 1st deployment and it is almost over. He is a mineman and has been transferred to San Diego from Ingleside. He will be arriving in San Diego on 7/15/09. His wife just moved there on July 1st. We are going to see him when he has 2 weeks leave on August 1st.

My son has been in Bahrain for 18 months. He frequently uses Skype to talk which is great because it is free, He also has a cell phone from the NEX. He buys minutes in advance and calls home if he gets a break at work. There are a lot of activities available for the sailors through the Liberty Center. They have a library and all kinds of tours to take advantage of. Wait till you get a picture of your sailor on a Camel! Fun! There are doing a very valuable job there in Bahrain. Be proud of all our sailors!

Hello mom's. son is one of 7 preparing to deploy to Bahrain. They had their passport pictures done this week and made their travel arrangements today for their leave. I am excited for him and he is so happy to be going to Bahrain, as a mom I am thinking, 2 years is a long time for him to be gone. Will make the most of our time together when he comes home on leave the end of the month and cook all of his favorites. Do most of your Sailors talk to ya'll and have a webcam? How often do you get to hear from your Sailor? What is an advance security detail??????? Hope everyone has a Happy 4th of July. God bless America and God bless our military. :D

My son just moved into his apartment this week and boy does it look great. I really love his sofa. I wonder how much it would cost to sent it home to me LOL

Hi everyone. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Memorial day. Bahrain NSA started an new academy last week so my son is starting to get down to business. He has found an apartment in town that he is happy with, but it sounds like he is going to have to go shopping for dishes and kitchen utensils.

Thanks for the tip Joyce, my son has purchased some sort of cell/phone card type combo but it's much more pricey. This is his first deployment so we are all still learning the ropes. Any advice or other tips you have are great appreciated.

Thank you Joyce, that is a good tip. I have been talking to him with a web cam on skype but we loose connection and it's tough to catch him at home.
