I have noticed over time the same questions have been ask. So I put a little something together in hopes that it will be helpful to all of you.

What will there first day be like at BC? I wonder if he or she is ok. Check out this site, it gives you some idea what there first day was like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd7_yp0Hkwc

Can they take anything to BC with them?
Recruits should go with what they have on there back. Everything will then come back to you in "The Box" They can keep their watch, religious metels and a wallet. Along with some toiletries.

"The Box"
This will be hard. This was your first test. The call will come. Short and to the point. " I made it, I am here, I am fine, Love you, I gotta go" Then "Your kid comes home in a box " minus your kid. Yes, you will cry but you will be fine. Then the form letter comes. You have waited days for a letter, something and all you get is a form letter with a small note at the bottom from your recruit. But this is all good. This form letter is full of info. Now you can mail out all the letters you have been writting. Remember to send a few picture along with encouraging words. Lots of letters. Mail is like gold to your recruit. They live for Mail day every Sunday. They also get to write home every Sunday. So run to the mail box every Wednesday for your letter. Some recruits will get to call home. This is something that is earned. And the calls are very random. Strange times of the day. But its always nice to hear from them.

"PIR date"
There is a web site to check grad dates.
http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/upcoming_grads.asp

Your form letter should have given you your recruits Division Number. You will need this to check your PIR date. If your divison is not listed. Be patient, it will be. Once PIR date is given and you know your child is doing well. Then you can start making plans for your trip.

There are many hotels in the area. I would recommed to rent a car. It makes life easier. After PIR most Sailors will be able to leave. But make sure they are back on time. No gifts at PIR. Sorry to say they are still in BC. Sailors can not take anything back to base with them. Enjoy your weekend with you son or daughter. Love the changes they made, see the sites of Chicago. Live for the moment. It all ends way to soon. But it will be the best weekend of you life.

I love the fact that this site has grown so large. I don't mean to make lite of Boot Camp but if you don't put a little humor in your life what a sad world it would be. Hope to talk you all of you later. Donna

Okay - after a whirlwind of nervous mother private investigating I have managed to find an address for my daughter. I decided to comb through the box of her stuff and then I went through her phone (controversial, yes. I simply couldn't help myself! [no, I don't really believe that either but it sounded good ;) ]) Well, it would seem that my daughter let another recruit use her phone to call her family while they were at the hotel. Her phone number was local so I called it and talked to the father of the girl. He was very sweet and has promised to call me when he gets home tonight and give me the address for their group. He only received a form letter from her on Saturday, so it isn't unreasonable that I haven't gotten the letter yet. I'm sufficiently pacified. For now.

Terry - I do feel your pain! I resorted to calling a perfect stranger that I only knew as "Mary's dad".

"Hello?" "Hi! I'm Janessa. Our daughters shipped out to boot camp on the same day and I saw where your daughter called you from my daughter's phone. Do you have an address for her yet?"

He was very sweet considering I probably sounded like a stalker-mom (that's something LIKE a soccer-mom, but who is a little more obsessive, right?) I don't know if all the recruits who get to boot camp at the same time end up in the same company. Heck, I don't even know if they call them "company"s in the Navy. LOL - I am so Navy naive. Anyway, I've spent enough time obsessing over her today. I have 4 other kids who are jockying for my attention. Hang in there, Terry! The address....communication...contact with your son is forthcoming.

Sharon,
With the holiday weekend things may have been held up a little bit. My son has been gone 2 weeks but I just got the form letter yesterday and it was post marked 3 days after he left. His box got here around the end of the first week so you may be getting it any time now. I know its easier said than done but try not to worry too much, I 'm sure you'll get something soon. Sorry you don't seem to be getting any info from the recruiter either . my son's was awesome( Thanks AM3 Maple) If your just going crazy and need an ear there are lots of us willing to listen. Hang in there.

My son left for boot camp on Aug. 28. I have not received any package of his belongings however, he said he was not paying to have them shipped back. Two phone calls no letter or address.

Sue, check out this web site:
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/navyjobs.htm
It lists all the navy jobs, tells about them, and tells where the navy school will be and for how long. I didn't see a diesel mechanic, but maybe if you read through, you can figure it out.

My daughter shipped off to boot camp Aug 25 and we still haven't received her address. I got a box of the things she had carried with her (clothes she was wearing, Ipod) but there wasn't any info in that about how to reach her. Should I call her recruiter? I am starting to get nervous about the fact I haven't heard ANYTHING from her yet.

Have you checked with his recruiter? They didn't tell you where he would be attending A school or whatever at? When did your son leave for bootcamp?
Sue McM. Comment by Sue McM. on September 3, 2008 at 2:06pm
Does anyone know where the school for diesel mechanics is? That's what Adam is planning on, but he hadn't heard before he headed off to BC, due to a change in MOS in the last month before MEPS.

Hi, my name is Lea Glass and I live in Decaturville, TN. My son, Garry, arrived at Boot Camp last night. I just received his address from his recruiter. He is: Ship 12/Division 408. Any other mom's with sons or daughters in this group? I am anxious to hear any suggestions or comments on how to be supportive.
