Care Package Ideas

There are so many ideas out there, groups that actually will send packages or gifts to our troops, recipes, themes, all kinds of ideas it would be fun to have an area to store them even though we have them scattered in other groups.

I am a moderator for navy moms on yahoo but also thru the years have done troop support for all branches. I also have started and maintained home town troop support and send from our little community in Spirit Lake Idaho that has been very very cool. So, if anyone has ideas they want to share and a way to group this, or if it just ends up that I can share the ideas I've recieved thru the years, bring it on and read and enjoy and use! If anyone needs suggestions on how to start a support group or how to send packages.

You'll find this invaluable:

These are opinions and ideas just of a personal note from Carla Street. My email is crlstrt5@msn.com if you have any questions or comments. Please let me know if any of the links don't work now or you have problems with them. Feel free to share these in other groups or with friends. Please leave on any credits I've left on, these aren't MY ideas, they are ones I've gathered from other groups and friends.

If you can't tell, I believe in the right to protest, the right to your opinion, but 100% support my military. I do it just in a personal way and want to encourage you to do what every you can to also support them, all politics aside. There are sites to do things like protect our medals and to send prayer blankets, you name it, they have it. Most of them are free. Always give credit to who first shared it if you can and respect their rights.

ADVICE: If you are sending personal care packages, use the flat rate boxes. They are FREE from the post office. They CAN be used for military and APO FPO addresses. As a matter of fact they have just developed a larger box that they give a discount if you are sending it APO/FPO. Go to www.usps.gov and type in "flat rate". You can get the boxes shipped to you from the post office for FREE in boxes of 25. Same with the custom slips. It's much nicer to do it at home. Don't bother with trying the faster services you have to pay more. Those only get it to someone faster stateside. These only get there as fast as the military gets them there. Expect a package to take at least 10 days to 14 days to arrive. In Afghanistan it takes often takes longer.

I love this idea--putting copies of pictures all over the inside of the box! I wrote my letters on the packing paper and drew on the inside of the box, but i like putting photos inside the box! I will remeber this for next deployment.

I have my nieces and nephews decorate the inside of boxes when they come over to the house...  they love to draw on them with markers and glitter glue!!

After we decorate the box I let them each pick out items from my stash to help fill the box... we too pick a them... sometimes it is just a color... like all blue items or all red items... or a beach party... or you are our hero...

Gives us something to laugh about when my sailor emails home trying to guess what the theme of his box was... and it helps to connect him with his younger cousins!!

Just remembered, my son has his xbox onboard.  I saw a couple of guys carrying on flatscreen tvs on the day of deployment.  I'm sure I'll get a request for some games.

Oh, I love that!!  I also thought of sending different card games.  Love the thumb drive idea, though my sailor has a lot already on his computer, I can still send some he doesn't have.  Big Bang is a big hit on his ship.  He has all the seasons and shares them.  I guess we're going to have to get creative.  hehehe

When my sailor was out to sea I sent several "theme" boxes including a beach party box, Halloween box (including masks, candy and trick or treat bags) movies are good, a thumb drive with their favorite tv shows (if they have a computer) and I even sent a "spa" box (of course they were all girls). It's surprising what you can pick up at the dollar tree and clearence racks

I love the food suggestions but I was wondering what kinds of things can we send for entertainment factor? My son just went out on his first deployment. Much to my dismay he does not read so magazines and books are out ( I am hoping that might change LOL) I am sending a very small game he grew up with called pass the pigs, and video games and movies are on the list but I am looking for just smaller scale pricewise. I have several friends who send their sailors/soldiers silly little toys and such just to give them a chuckle like water balloons, marshmallow shooters and toys that you find in the party supply sections of the stores, but they are all deployed on land so I'm not sure if that's OK for the ships.
