Thanks Marty. I have been toying with the idea to buy his flight back to base only, since that is a 'gotta get there on time' trip. But, I think I will wait till he gets here before I buy it and then I will know how much ease or difficulty it was. It's scary... a little, nothing in the grand scheme of things, lol.

Karen I will praying that he gets right on the flight no problem! I hope it works out, Cary will be home in december we already bought his ticket but if it works out for you guys he will definitely be trying it in the future keep us posted.

thanks Moms. Well, when the flights are now at 600. we are going the hop route. We will trust God to see this through. He says that "Mom, I have learned how to kill lots of time and be okay with sitting and doing nothing, so waiting in an airport won't be any different". We will make a list of all the flights and where to go for him, and then when he gets here in Phoenix, we will make the list for going back. I will let you all know how it goes. For $15. it's worth the chance to get here eventually. I am sure the Reagan airport will help him look for direct flights that are not sold out too. If I can still buy a ticket at that moment, seems like he should be able to jump on without too much of an issue. Praying for ease in this. And he said, "Mom, it is an honor to wear my uniform home, so I want to wear it on the plane."... warms my heart.

Karen, looks like most of that discussion was deleted. Here is my reply to someone which give a solid clue about the air hop situation:

"You verified what I had thought would be the case for those air hops my sis told me about - availability and lots of luck. LOL!"

Hi Karen,
No, they are not required to wear their uniform home. Lots of restrictions when they wear it too. Because they are representing the Navy or whatever armed forces they are in. They cannot disgrace the uniform.

You guys are hilarious. I wish I could come visit you all for Turkey Day.

Karen, we had a conversation about the Military Hop once before on this board. I'll see if I can find what it said, but I do remember that it was not an easy thing to do and extremely unreliable.

My massage therapist used to be in one of the services, I was too relaxed on the table to remember which one, but he said to have our son see if there was a military flight carrying guys over to somewhere close like to CA and see if he could catch a ride that way. I have never heard of something like that, have any of you?

No my son has not done stand by yet. Is your son going to give a try? Cary came home in September and he wore his uniform home. I cried when I saw him he was so handsome I think some of the other moms who have been here for while may know for sure but I think if they want to wear there uniforms they can but dont have to.

Have any of your Sailors ever done the "Military Hop" where they sit stand by to see if there is an open spot on a flight? and
When I traveled during the holidays, I always see guys in uniform. Are they supposed to wear it home? Just wondering.
