Just found out my son will be going to MLG Okinawa Japan for 3 years. Looking to hear from anyone who can tell me what to expect. My son doesn't tell us much of anything, just hates to talk on the phone! If you can believe that!!!

Have any of you traveled to Okinawa? My husband and I are thinking about it and I'm looking for any info I can find!

Hello everyone. My son will be going to Okinawa in January. I do not know which camp yet but hope to find out this weekend. I am really nervous for him yet also excited. He just graduated FMTB on Oct 8th at Camp Lejeune. I look forward to getting to know each of you and learning as much as I can from your experiences.

Yes, there are several Marine bases, Camp Foster, Camp Kinser, Camp Schwab, Camp Hansen, Camp Courtney, and Camp Lester, I'm sure I've missed a couple. My husband had told him Okinawa is just one huge base. LOL

It took my son about a week before he was able to contact us. They are pretty busy doing inprocessing and moving their stuff to their barracks. I believe my son said he had to take a class or two about Okinawa and the rules/regulations...that sort of stuff when he arrived. Your son should have a "sponsor" that he should have emailed or called, the sponsor will help him. Someone from the base was at the Naha airport to pick him up and drive them to the base. There were more than one Corpsman flying to Okinawa too, that was comforting for me.

He has AU as his cell phone provider, I have international plan on my cell phone so I do call him about once a month, it still costs about 20 cents a minute to call him. He will call me just to tell me to call him, international rate on his cell phone is outrageous. We also use skype and facebook to keep in contact.
Here is a website that may help you: http://www.mccsokinawa.com/
Sorry this is so long, I've been in your shoes and know what you are going through. Except you are closer to Okinawa than I am, we live in Nebraska. LOL
Take care...

Thanks for the info. I'll have to get with the times and get an ipod touch.
I really do miss him, we haven't seen him since bootcamp. We couldn't go to his FMTB graduation it is so expensive to fly from hawaii.
He was on his way to Japan early this morning. We havn't heard from him yet. I hope he made it. We don't even know where he will be, other then Okinawa. Is there more then one base?

momofTony....my son has an ipod touch and we are able to text without it costing a dime. He also has a laptop to he has a wireless router in his room so he can use his ipod touch. Internet costs about $40 a month. Let me know if I can answer any questions. My son is at Camp Kinser right now. I can't wait until Christmas so we can see our son!

My son is a corpsmen too. He is scheduled to fly to Oki sometime this week or next week. I was hoping he could come home before he went to Oki, but that's not possible. We live in Hawaii, so we could only afford to go to his boot camp graduation in Dec 09. Flying cost so much!!! I really miss him!!!!
I'm glad for this group, you have given me hope. I was so worried about how I would be able to keep in contact.

Hey, if that is a photo of him, he resembles my son. :) Aren't they handsome in their blues? My son is 24, but not very mature, so I think he is doing a whole lot of growing up. Sure hope so. I have heard stories of how some of the guys claim things in the room as theirs and won't share, or of them being more sloppy and careless. Guess one has to live with it until things change. My son had a bad roommate, but he was gone after a while. So things worked out. I guess it could be a lot worse.
Since my son works in a hospital, he is getting a lot of good experience. He really likes the action in the er and just helping people. I hope he is doing as good a job as he says... He really wanted to go through the FMTB program, but the timing wasn't good. I'm glad he didn't now. There is another corpsman doing what your son is doing and he doesn't like it much, either. More like being a marine with the pt and all.
Good luck with your son. I'm sure things will be better soon. And yes, it certainly is very hard to stay optimistic when our guys are so far away. I work on that every day.

yes, my son is a corpsman but he fills crates with medical supplies. All this training he has done, A school and FMTB, and he is filling crates....go figure. The marines give him a hard time because my son doesn't like to go lift weights, he tall and skinny (genetics) and so they make fun of how he looks and because he's blue side and not green side. Now they are making them move to a different floor in their barracks. He just spent $100 on a computer desk and he may not be able to move it into his "new" room. Bunch of bologna if you ask me. His room mate was using the desk that is provided in their room and since the roommate was there before my son, he doesn't seem to "share" the desk. So my son went out and bought one for himself. Just really disappointed in what is going on these past couple of weeks.
I hope you are feeling better, and hopefully your son will be able to fly out to see you while he is on leave. It's hard to stay positive when your children are so far away.
