Hi Nita, Austin is on the USS Donald Cook. They just deployed out on Mon. That is great that at least one of yours will be a little closer to home and you can visit with him. That was hard too with Austin being in Norfolk and we live in Texas, central Texas, can't just hop in the car and go for a visit. So it was nice that I could at least talk to him all of the time. So this will be hard with him being gone that I can't just pick up the phone and call. At least they have email.

Donita, My son is a Damage Controlman on the USS Enterprise. This carrier is not supposed to deploy until sometime next year. My son gets frustrated because he hasn't gotten his BAH pay yet so his wife and daughter can move to VA. to be with him. I get upset with him and remind him that he could already be at sea. I think he is pretty lucky being able to call home every day. The Enterprise is expected to take one more deployment and then retire. I miss him like crazy but I know that there are N4Ms out there missing their sailors alot more. I pray for safety and a speedy return of your sailor.

Hi Donita, I actually have 2. The DC has been in for 7 yrs now and he is going to GL to be an instructor. My other has been in for 8 years and is an AT. He is in CA and is just finishing up recruiting and will be going back to work on the planes. Joey (AT) was stationed there by Norfolk for his first assignment. That was great because we live in NC and so we were able to see him pretty often. I have missed him since he has been in CA. JJ (DC) was in San Diego and then went to Pearl Harbor, so now with him going to GL at least he is closer and will be able to see him a little more often. What ship is your son on?

Hi Nita, thanks. Its just hard not being able to talk to him at anytime like we could with him in Norfolk. At least there is email. And I'm sure the time will pass by quickly, but your right it does not seem like that now. Tell me about your sailor.

Hi Donita, the first deployment is the toughest. He will be back before you know it. They are able to stay in contact via emails so that helps. It doesn't seem like it now but the time will go by pretty quick.

Hi. My son Austin is a Damage Controlman. He is DCFN. His ship the USS Donald Cook left this morning 7/20/09 for its 6 month deployment. This is the first time he has been on a 6 month deployment. I am feeling a little anxious and a lot proud all at the same time. Sad that we could not be there this morning to see him off. Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Austin's Mom

Hi. My son's PIR is July 24 as well. Can't wait!

I would like to suggest that you head to the PIR at least 2 hours early. Although the process of getting on base and parked is organized and well-run, it is slow-going. The line of cars to get in is miles long and they will start promptly even if a N4M isn't there yet!

We flew into Milwaukee and stayed at the Ramada Inn on Green Bay Rd. Breakfast starts an hour earlier on the day of PIR-they have a pool as well. During A school we stayed at the LaQuinta near the Gurnee Mall with breakfast and pool as well.

I am new at this and dont know much about DC, but learning alot from the web, thank god for the internet! Looking forward to the graduation ceremony on July 24th, still looking for a place to stay. Not familiar with that area at all. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know, need a place w/a pool, will have a couple kids with us and need to keep them occupied.
