The passport thing is huge! Please make sure they have an updated tourist passport. Many times the government no fee passports take longer or they don't get them before they deploy, then if there is an emergency at home while they are deployed, they can't get home quickly. They have to have a passport to fly home from overseas. Many of these that are out on ships can't fly back via government planes and they can't enter the US without a passport. I have had this situation with a couple of my sailors during this deployment.

Dear idahojeep,
I've been through the whole color blind situation. John was actually at MEPS to swear in for the a NUKE slot when they retested his vision and stated he was color blind. It was a HUGE disappointment at first for John. We came back to the recruiting office and had them sit down with us and show us what exactly was available for someone who is colorblind. Only about eleven jobs, if I remember correctly. John was at home debating about what to do and was pretty down about the whole situation when at the very last minute I got a call at the house from the recruiter stating that John needed to be at the office ASAP. I think the recruiters all went out and bought lottery tickets this day because out of the blue a CTN position was available. We had been told over and over again that there weren't any jobs available until the Nuke slots were filled. Then we had to wait because of other reasons. I think God was looking out for John cause when the phone rang I looked at the caller id and almost didn't answer it cause I didn't recognize the number. CTN is exactly what John wanted to do before they informed him that he was NUKE qualified. The sad thing is is that a NUMBER of people reviewed John's records because he had to have a waiver to begin with and not ONE of these people caught the whole colorblind issue. Well, it's in the past now and John can't wait for school and is so happy to be CTN. Not to worry, we do have a NUKE in our mist, his girlfriend qualified for a NUKE slot and leaves in March. Just tell the boys to keep their heads up, I promise it's not the end of the world.

LtTXsmarty - That is great for your son getting CTN. There are few if any CT jobs but MEPS said there are 70 slots for CTI. We have to get the DLAB over. If they do not pass the DLAB they do want CTR or CTN. Both of them are colorblind so they can't have CTT or CTM. The colorblind thing really limits the jobs to about only 20% of all jobs in the Navy and that just stinks for them. They had checked into the Air Force but you can't even have the medical job they have now if you are colorblind.

Having passports up to date is helpful too. When they are deployed out of the US is helpful to be able to leave on a moments notice. So I would advise parents and or wife have theirs up to date.

Don't forget the medical POA also know as the Advance Health Care Directive. We also have a document called the HIPPA which grants us control of medical documents if necessary. Hope that helps.

Michelle,
Glad you're back in full form! We've missed ya! Things here are pretty good today as I got my first "REAL" letter. Not long but that's O.K., I know they are crazy busy!

Idahojeep, my son is at GL now and is a CTN. After GL he'll be headed to Florida for A & C school. He was SO excited to get the CTN position, it's EXACTLY what he wanted. Hope they get what they want.

Little brother is saying no to puffy but I just might do a picture things that includes his gf and a bunch of his friends. That way he will still feel connected. By the time he gets to Dam Neck for A school his sister will have already left. He will just have to deal with the instructors who knew his big sis. Should be fun, just like it was in high school.
