Sam's Mom - they have right up to the final swearing in, the morning they leave for boot camp, to change their minds. After they swear in for the final time they are committed. A good recruiter will keep them engaged and encouraged.

Hi everyone, I have a question that I have not seen here. Some of the DEPper's have such a long wait until BC, so much can change in that time, what happens if they change their mind - must they still go? I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question but I still have many concerns over this whole thing.

Thanks for all the great comments and support. It helps :-)

My son's date is currently Jan 24, 2011, but that will likely change. He's waiting on a waiver so he can go in as a nuke and that will push his date to sometime around June 2011.

In the meantime, we're trying to get used to living in the same house again. It's painfully obvious that the people he has been hanging around with over the last couple of years have rubbed off on him and not in a good way. It's hard as a mom to see those changes and keep reminding myself that he's not just my little boy anymore.

My son is to leave Mach 2011, joined in May, he started out saying when the summer was over he was going to request to leave early but now that he realizes how quickly time is passing he seems content to wait until the original date. I should rephrase he is not going to seek it out, if they ask him that would be different.

Arwen - thanks for letting me know. He said he wants to get passed Christmas and then he'll be ready to go. Did your son have to change ratings in order to go sooner? That's what my son is afraid of - what if he goes earlier but gets stuck with something he really doesn't want do.

Proud, he can request having his date moved up at any time. My son was supposed to leave in April 2010, but his date was moved up twice, first to January, then he actually went to boot camp in Dec. 2009.

My son signed his Navy contract a year ago this week and is now home again, getting ready to head to his first ship. The time moves so fast, you won't believe how quickly you go from waiting for boot camp to being the proud parent of a fleet sailor.

Hi Fellow Moms - my son ships out July 12, 2011. Although, he says that after the first of the year, he may request to go sooner.
