Navy For Moms

Ok, ladies, I need advice. Timelines, etc...My husband called Sunday, Nov 1 and said "start packing". I want to live on base. Right now we (kids and I) are in Arkansas and of course moving to such an unfamiliar place. His orders start Nov 21st, and he said he does not have to pass through certain phases before we live together since he already has a family (which I have heard from others). I am having him sign POA next week after graduation when I see him.... anybody have any idea how to do all this? wait times for a house? Navy moving our things? I just don't know what to expect and need to know if I need to be packed like next week and if they are just gonna say, "Hey, we got u a house, we'll be there tomorrow to get your stuff." LOL

beerflanigin,

I'm not sure about the rules when you want to live on base, but if your husband wants to live off base, he has to complete a 'Live Ashore' packet. In order to become a Live Ashore, your husband has to get into Phase 2 liberty after getting out of bootcamp. As far as living on base, I'm not sure about that- I don't know anyone that lives on base.. You might try to find the number of the Navy Housing on base, and maybe someone there can help you out with wait times and moving and such. Good luck!

To live on base its the same thing. They must fill out a live ashore packet but tell them its for on base housing. Its a little different paperwork. Your hubby then needs to go to housing and put your name on the waiting list. They will then give you an ESTIMATED length of time on wait. We were put on housing list 4 months ago, and we are still waiting. We were told 4-6 months back then.

Yah what the other ladies said. And what heather said if you want to live on base there have been holds! If you do not want to wait I would suggest looking at apartments and that would make the wait WAY less. I live at Eagle Ridge and have referred quite a few of the ladies here. I personally really like it. If you look thru the AECF wives forum on here there is quite a bit of info on it. Good luck!

Well that's what I'm so confused about. When I called the housing office, I was told the wait time would be no longer than 4 WEEKS!!!! I will be in GL for his PIR friday, so I guess we will try and go by there and see if we can get some clarification. I would rther not live in an apartment, but if need be, that's what we'll do. It seems like it would be more convenient to live on base, so that we arent calling this place and that place to get utilities turned on, etc...I am in Arkansas with 2 kids, so I need to do whatever takes the least amount of steps possible... with such a new, big area, I am a little leary of all areas off base, just because of crime and such, and wanting to live somewhere convenient for him to get to school and not have to drive too far. Thanks for your help!

Just so you know housing is not "ON" base. It's called on base but it's not like the army where it's behind the gates where they work. It's down the road from base and there are a few neighborhoods that consist of on base housing but anyone can drive into the neighborhoods. So I don't know if it's any "safer" than living in town.

If you're husband's A school is long enough, the military will move you (and pack everything). You can call TMO (traffic management office) at Great Lakes and get info. You should also be able to find the base you're moving to online. On that site, there's usually a TON of info as far as housing, etc. You can live in base housing or out in town. If you're out in town, you may be able to save some of the housing allowance (as in finding a place that costs less than what you're paid in BAH. Remember though, your utilities are covered in housing (except phone, TV and internet). Good luck

Hello. Well, I live off base, but my husband's friend's family just moved up, and at first he was told the wait time was about 4 months, but he just got a call last weekend that he can move in this week. So I guess it just depends on how many bedroom you're wanting to get. The one bedroom are the harder ones to get. Well, good luck.

Wait, wait, wait LOL. That's what we're doing :) It's not a huge deal to live on base, I thought it might be more convenient, since we will have to get a 3 bedroom. I found some nice homes off base, but I don't know where not to live, ya know? Also, if we live off base, we have to get utilities turned on, put deposits down, etc.... and since i am down here and he's in school, that's not super easy LOL. I guess I just need to be patient :)

I just wanted to tell you if you do live out in town it's not hard to set up your utilities you just ask the apartment complex who they use and call and set it up with a card. Not hard at all. : )

My husband has a friend that his family only had to wait 6 weeks because they needed a 3 bedroom, and they seem to have more of those available. I live off base in a one bedroom apartment so I do save BAH, but if you need a bigger apartment, you may or may not. But yea, just have your husband get that packet, do it, and do w/e it takes to be phase 2. Took my husband 4 weeks to complete it all, and now he is living with me off base. Good luck with everything!

We need a 3 bedroom, and I figured they would be a little easier to get. He told me he doesn't have to do certain phases because he already had a family, but who knows? He said he was told by an officer, but there seems to not be a cut and dry answer to anything LOL. I told him to grab the packet if he got a chance, so hopefully we will be able to start everything ths Friday. :) Thanks!

Your hubby will be phase 1 when he first gets to A school side. It will take him about 2 weeks or so to get to phase 3. Phase 1 he must be in uniform at all times (no civies) must be back every night even on weekends, he can not drink alcohol....Then he must take a test and pass to get his phase 2 (usually a couple weeks) He then can live off base, drink alcohol (if of age) stay out over night on weekends (if hes not a live ashore) and can wear civies. He can still start the process of his live ashore packets and all that as soon as he gets to A school side. However he must be phase 2 to do whats listed above. This is for everyone, wether you have family or not. Just since he is married he can live off base. If he was not married he would have to live in barracks, I assume that maybe this is what was meant when he was told.
