This will be my 1st christmas without my sailor. He PIR'd Aug 08 came home on emergency leave in Sept. and 2 weeks at christmas. So he started 2009 in the hole. He came home for 10 days between A and C schools and will be home hopefully sometime in Feb before he goes to his homeport ( if orders ever come in) so christmas was out of the question.
He doesnt mind, he will be in the middle of finals and would rather stay on base where he has access to the schoolhouse for studying. ( Did MY son say that?)
I hope he can find somewhere to go for xmas, it saddens me to think of him in his room alone. I remember all too well the videochat we had last Thanksgiving where my son was in his room alone eatting ramen noodles :O(

Yes, he's a nuke though. He has asked I don't post about him, so that's why I don't get to brag, ansd I sure could, he's doing well. I also have a friend on the Dubuque who is like a son. He's an ET like hubby and I were, and he's on hubby's old ship. He told his detailer about us and got those rather unexpected orders! But it is rather cool. And like a kid, I don't hear much from him, LOL.

Anti M-That's true I can't even imagine all the info they have to take in. Is your nephew in the Navy too??

Hey, it does get confusing, and to make it more fun, the Navy changes things around! New sailors often don't have a handle on policies and such, they're learning too. LOL, figures leave and liberty would be this old sailor's area of expertise.....

Now if I could only get my nephew to tell me his holiday plans. I think he's ducking his ex-GF who doesn't quite grasp she is an ex. I don't think he knows himself some days, poor guy.

Anti M- the way you explain it makes sense lol, I guess it's because when I ask Jake he's turning over his shoulder and asking a friend and it gets confusing sometimes if someone else doesn't know exactly or something..Does that make sense lol?

That holiday stand down is not free time off, unfortunately. They earn leave at 2.5 days each month, so ten days is four months. Since so many schools at Glakes are lengthy, they earn them back while they're in training. Of course, that four months puts them back at zero. For students who PIR a few months before the holidays, it isn't so bad, but for a sailor right out of boot camp, they're starting out behind the curve on leave if they go home for the holidays.

Why do they want as many as possible to go on leave? For one, the instructors and staff would like to take leave also. The more students on leave, the less staff has to keep working. That, and closing down some of the ships saves a ton in heating and electricity.

Davidsmom- Yeah Jake was saying they go in the hole for Christmas too, I guess they let them go "in the hole" 10 days but they gain them back quickly...It doesn't really make sense to me either lol. But then again a lot of this stuff doesn't always make sense. Is David coming home for Christmas??
DAVIDSmom Comment by DAVIDSmom on November 24, 2009 at 4:37pm
Emily--David is doing his INDOC this week. They said on the other sights that he will go in the hole for coming home for xmas but they also said that they encourage them to come home and get off base. A little confused about all that
