Hey Kelly,
Sorry to here you've been down with a bug, hope your feeling better. I haven't been on here in a while. You gals have been busy!!! Took me forever to read back and then I forget what I wanted to comment on! LOL Been pretty busy around here with horrible record setting flooding, worse than we had in 1993. A good portion of our downtown area is in water and they have closed all the bridges except one. Thankfully our house is in no danger but my niece lives in an area under mandatory evacuation. The evacuation areas keep getting extended. It has keep us pretty busy around here helping out where we can. The river still hasn't crested and the forecast isn't good. (raining today again). We just keep praying for clear skies.

Hello Peg,
SCC isn't hard. Sailors have to pass SCC since they can't go to a ship until they do. If they don't do well in ATT or A school, they will just be sent to the fleet.

Mary, the care package idea is great! I'm going to hop right on that.

Marsher,
My son Kyle is on the Mustin too. I just found that out a couple days ago. I happened to ask him if his "ship" had a name like it did when he was in BC and he said he was on the Mustin. Don't feel bad I haven't sent Kyle anything since we got back from visiting him in March. We will be going up next weekend for his A school graduation if he completes everything and passes his final. He assures me he is going to get done!!!

Jealous Jackie, 4th of july in GL, we may try to go up Labor Day. I did get a text from the boy last night, he said he has been very busy but took last night off from classes - didn't say how he was spending his evening but he seems to be focused on class. I know he has duty today and the weekend off which I think he is ready for.

Doing laundry is dangerous work - huh?

Don't feel bad Mary it is usually 3 to 4 days between calls for us also. I usually have to leave a voice mail to phone home ET.lol. Then he calls when he has time. He has not been going over to the extra classes which worries me but he said he is doing just fine.( I hope so)I don't know if the commanders cup is optional or not.

We called John last night to tell him that we would be coming up there for the 4 th of July. He was very excited about that. He cut the top of his foot open Sunday evening in the laundry room , He tripped and fell on something. He waited to go to medical until Monday and they ended up closing it with liquid stitches and told him to come back if it gets infected. They also put him on light duty for 10 days, He is in a splint.Said he will be alright.

grrrrrrrrr...haven't talked to my son in three days! What will I ever do when he goes out to the fleet?!!! I am always reluctant to call him with their schedule of class, duty, etc. Last we talked, he was on his way back for night classes so I'm assuming he is just busy but geez maybe I better get to work on those cookies soon!

Is doing the Commanders' Cup...optional?!

The flag gives them some bragging rights, I wonder how often they do this event.
Jackie Comment by Jackie on June 11, 2008 at 6:38am
Hello, John said that they only get a flag for winning the Commanders cup, No extra liberty of anything Great. He said he did it for something to do.

Oh Peg, on this forum - you never have to apologize for being a...mom!

I maybe mistaken but I don't believe the SCC program is anything to be worried about. It's just a basic seamanship program and they are tested and need to pass the program but your son should have no problem with this course. SCC is not self-paced, it is a structured and scheduled program.

When they move into ATT, the program kicks in. It is basic electronics course that they have to learn before starting their actual A school. Classes are nine hours long a day and then there is an expectation or request for volunteer sessions in the evening as well. I have not been able to talk to our son long enough to know if they test each week or what the testing schedule is like. ATT is a self-paced program, with that being said the students are told that the expectation of the program is ____ weeks but depending on their individual progress they will finish sooner or later. Sooner is good, later could be a problem. They are not going to allow them to be weeks behind the other students but some may move thru the material a tad faster than others.

With ATT, the students always know exactly where they are at in the program.

With Dan still being in SCC, he is still very new - he probably doesn't have alot of the answers for you yet but once he moves into ATT, he will be living and schooling with the FCs and ETs and they will be a various stages of their training and they learn alot from those sailors.
