Hi welcome to the Navy family - I have a grandson in Groton right now and had another just graduate A school in March.  Both my grandson are ST (Sonar Tech) so their schooling may be a bit longer than your guy.  But it will definitely be longer than 8 weeks.  When he gets to Grton he will have to do BESS which is 8 weeks itself, then after then he will most likely have ATT and then TECHNO both of which are self paced and maybe 6-8 weeks each.  Then after that he will have his A school.  Plus he may have some hold times in between classes.  The grandson that graduated A in March/April got to Groton in May so he was there nearly a year but ST A school in longer than MM A school I believe.  I hope this helps, sometimes the info you get from the recruiters is not accurate.  Also the grandson that graduated A school, he had his girlfriend fly out to Groton and they got married there.

Yes, like Nana said your fiance will be in Groton much longer than 8wks. 8wks is just the basic sub class (BESS). After that there is more schooling.

hi ladies- thanks for the great info! i learned that he will be in groton much longer tan 8 weeks. the BESS that you were talking abou is 4 weeks for him. then an additional 9 weeks for his A school. then after that a possibility of 2 C schools leaving us with between 5-7 months for his schooling.

Hi Megan,

BESS is the same for all the guys at Groton which is eight weeks.  He is likely to be on hold before and after each school he attends.

Our son told us --- BESS is 8 weeks, (but he technically didn't start that until he had been in Groton 2 weeks) then BMS (basic machinist school) is going to be 4 weeks, and then MM school is 3 weeks---- making a total of 15 weeks. He will be in Groton that full time.
