Comment by LoriM (div 337--Kevin's submom) on Friday Hi everyone, my son has been at Groton since Oct., 12. Just some info I send my son care packages and anything else he may need thru the us post office. I use their express mail (?) box. It cost $15(?) and you can put as much as you can fit in it. Trust me I pact that thing full and tight. So, know matter what it weights it cost about $15. And it gets to them in about 2 days. Even though with my son it takes him about 2 weeks to pick it up. LOL
My son's PIR was almost 5 years ago (is that possible???). We got to spend a lot of time with him. We met up with him at the airport and were able to give him his phone and laptop, which was fantastic. He didn't leave until Sunday, so we had Saturday to spend with him. The weather was horrible so we stayed out in the Great Lakes area, eating, going to the Mall, and finding a place to ship home his pictures. It was an incredible weekend.
About a year ago, I moved my daughter to Chicago (from Louisiana). She kept her car, so I flew home. It just so happened, I flew to Houston with a bunch of guys and gals who had just PIR'd. It brought back so many happy memories. I introduced myself to a small group near me, told them I was a "Navy Mom" and told them that I would watch all their gear while they got something to eat, used the restroom, etc. They were very grateful and it made me feel so good to be able to help. I was struck by their caring for each other, making sure that everyone was taken care of. Yes, the lesson learned at Boot Camp carry on. It brought tears to my eyes more than once.

My man PRI was 7 June 13. He is now at Groton. After PIR we went to Flagagans to eat. It was cheap and great food and service. You can get anything there from Pizza to surf and turf. Very clean place and the take ten dollars off the cost of your sailors meal. It is the closest place to the gate. My man had surf and turf. It cost me something like $15.00 or $20.00 dollars. Was not crowed and they will lett you sit around for as long as you want. We then went to our near by moter for a while then back to base and the NEX.
Do not go to the NEX right after PIR. Everyone does and you will be wasting time with him. Come back to bace a little early and then go the the NEX. You will be able to hang out there.
