Is he allowed to ride on base? My son didn't take his with him when he went back after Christmas or more recently memorial day weekend because he said that you couldn't ride them around base

My son bought a new one when he got there. He said they've been to a skate park too...so I would say yes, they're allowed to have them.

P.S. Ladies this is how I sent his laptop plus other items.  I did put  insurance on the package.  It was only a couple of more dollars.

Hi everyone, my son has been at Groton since Oct., 12.  Just some info I send my son care packages and anything else he may need thru the us post office.   I use their express mail (?) box.  It cost $15(?) and you can put as much as you can fit in it.  Trust me I pact that thing full and tight.  So, know matter what it weights it cost about $15. And it gets to them in about 2 days.  Even though with my son it takes him about 2 weeks to pick it up.  LOL

My son's PIR was almost 5 years ago (is that possible???).  We got to spend a lot of time with him.  We met up with him at the airport and were able to give him his phone and laptop, which was fantastic.  He didn't leave until Sunday, so we had Saturday to spend with him.  The weather was horrible so we stayed out in the Great Lakes area, eating, going to the Mall, and finding a place to ship home his pictures.  It was an incredible weekend.

About a year ago, I moved my daughter to Chicago (from Louisiana).  She kept her car, so I flew home.  It just so happened, I flew to Houston with a bunch of guys and gals who had just PIR'd.  It brought back so many happy memories.  I introduced myself to a small group near me, told them I was a "Navy Mom" and told them that I would watch all their gear while they got something to eat, used the restroom, etc.  They were very grateful and it made me feel so good to be able to help.  I was struck by their caring for each other, making sure that everyone was taken care of.  Yes, the lesson learned at Boot Camp carry on.  It brought tears to my eyes more than once.

Mammabear...my son graduated BC May 26th. Here is some information that I found useful. Everyone says to take the shuttle to PIR but we drove. It was very convenient and nice to have our car right after the ceremony. I agree with bettyboop48...do not go to NEX after PIR. It's so crowded and a waste of time. Hopefully your SR had his pictures sent directly with you or picked them up early. After we left the base my son just wanted to hang out at the hotel and tell us stories of BC. We ate at Chili's. There were several other Sailors there as well. We hung out at the Residence Inn until we took him back at about 7pm. They are sticklers for being on time so we went early and went to the NEX and bought some souveniers. The navy sweats are super soft and really comfortable. We went back to the hotel and slept. Got up at 1am to go to the airport. Can't remember the terminal we went to (they'll tell you at the meet and greet on Thursday night at the Sundance Saloon) The Sailors arrived about 2:30am and had to get briefed and checked into their flights. After that they can hang out with you. They are not supposed to lay down in the airport but we surrounded him and let him pass out with his head on my shoulder...such a great memory for me! He got some well needed sleep and we fed him. His flight left at 10:30am so we didn't have that much time. If your son has more time with an afternoon flight, you can take him to an airport hotel and just be back in plenty of time. You can give your son his phone and laptop to him at the airport. They have a lot to carry so he might not want his laptop. Put it in a case or backpack and have him take it anyway. It cost me $80 to ship it and I sent other stuff with it. My son had to pick it up and carry the 26 lb box 2 miles to his room. Not very much fun! Anyway, my son was nervous about Groton and not sure what to expect. To give your son some piece of mind, tell him my son was greeted like a human being and his roommates had a gamers night with pizza in his room. He likes it there.. Hope this info helps. let me know if you have any more questions.....And Congratulations!

Hey Mamabear

My man PRI was 7 June 13.  He is now at Groton.  After PIR we went to Flagagans to eat.  It was cheap and great food and service. You can get anything there from Pizza to surf and turf.  Very clean place and the take ten dollars off  the cost of your sailors meal.  It is the closest place to the gate.  My man had surf and turf.  It cost me something like $15.00 or $20.00 dollars.  Was not crowed and they will lett you sit around for as long as you want.  We then went to our near by moter for a while then back to base and the NEX.

Do not go to the NEX right after PIR. Everyone does and you will be wasting time with him.  Come back to bace a little early and then go the the NEX.  You will be able to hang out there.
